Why does the job exist?
The purpose of this position is to establish, maintain and operate a mobile air monitoring unit, including identifying necessary components and configurations of a mobile lab and coordinating field staff and data management. The position will also support a contract for super-emitter responses.
How does it get done?
Bachelor's degree in Physical, Natural, or Environmental Science, Soil Science, or Engineering and five (5) years of work experience in public/environmental health, environmental science, Air Quality Management, Biology, Engineering, Chemistry, Geology, Hazardous Waste Management, Wildlife Management, and/or Water Resources. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling nine (9) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
The job requires significant in-state travel and working outdoors in often inclement weather. Fieldwork requires driving the mobile monitoring lab long distances, climbing ladders, and working on trailer rooftop. Travel will be to often remote areas and will require overnight stays of a few days to 3 weeks, depending on nature of air monitoring required. Some duties will also be performed in an office or laboratory. Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

How does it get done?
- Implement, operate, and maintain a mobile ambient air monitoring station to be used throughout New Mexico
- Sampling and analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and Methane in addition to the criteria gas and particulate pollutants to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and to protect public health and the environment
- Operating the air monitoring equipment, maintaining the equipment environment, verifying automated performance checks, submitting data, and performing equipment repairs
- Maintaining operational knowledge of the ambient monitoring site computer¿s operating systems software, functionality of remote communications equipment and supporting/training field staff on equipment and non-equipment matters
- The mobile lab will be equipped with state-of-the-art air monitoring instruments and configured to provide accurate and reliable data collection in various locations
