The New Mexico State Fire Marshals Office consists of four Bureaus, Fire Service Support, Code Enforcement, Fire Investigations, and the Firefighters Training Academy.
This position is for the Fire Training academy located in Socorro, New Mexico.
Why does the job exist?
Maintain and make repairs to buildings, grounds, training props, vehicles, and equipment for proper training of firefighters and other State Agencies that attend classes at the New Mexico Firefighters Training Academy Campus.
How does it get done?
Plant System Operators are responsible for the physical plant maintenance of a state owned or leased facility. Employees in this position perform duties such as, but are not limited to, carpentry work, cement work, masonry work, electrical work, welding, painting, inspecting and maintaining heating, cooling and ventilation systems. Employees in this position are required to maintain vehicles and equipment. Plant system operators are to ensure that all the grounds, classrooms, buildings, walkways, fire equipment, fire props and vehicles are ready for scheduled trainings at all times. Plant systems operators are responsible for landscaping and grounds keeping of the facility. Janitorial duties will also be required as needed. Plant system operators will be required to attend classes and trainings to help perform their duties. Out of town travel and working some weekends is required. Opening and closing of the facility, as well as security checks are the responsibility of the Plant System operators. Employees will also perform other duties as assigned, that are reasonably within the scope of duties, issued by the Plant manager.

Ideal Candidate
Ideal candidate :
- Can operate hand and power tools, and heavy equipment.
- Knows how to perform preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment,
- Knows basic carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work
- Experience in concrete work, welding, Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) units, landscaping
- Can read blueprints
- Has basic computer skills.
Minimum Qualification
High school diploma or equivalent and two (2) years construction experience to include familiarity with application of building codes and regulations, basic electrical, plumbing, ventilation, maintenance, and / or custodial operations; building trade experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and / or direct experience in this occupation totaling two (2) years may substitute for the required experience.

Employment Requirements
Employment is subject to background investigation and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Walking, lifting, working in inclement weather, standing on ladders, working in confined spaces, at heights, indoors and outdoors; Requires good coordination, physical strength and endurance, hearing and sight and ability to communicate both written and verbal; Driving a motor vehicle is required; May be exposed to hazards of power equipment, dust, chemicals, fumes, boiler and high noise levels; Communicating and interacting with residents, staff and the public on a daily basis; Occasional travel for trainings or meetings is required; Individual is subject to 24-hour call and rotating weekends; Working hours may include weekends, holidays, callbacks and overtime.
