The New Mexico State Fire Marshals Office consists of four Bureaus, Fire Service Support, Code Enforcement, Fire Investigations, and the Firefighters Training Academy.
Why does the job exist?
The position exists to determine the cause of fires for the purpose of fire prevention in the state. Investigators collect information regarding cause and circumstances of fires and assist law enforcement in the prosecution of arson related crimes.
How does it get done?
This position is responsible for determination of fire causes, conducting witness interviews, collecting evidence, preparing investigative reports, and providing testimony as a expert witness in court proceedings in compliance with national standards.
Who are the customers?
DHSEM and SFMO Management, New Mexico citizens, fire departments, law enforcement, state / federal prosecutors.
Ideal Candidate
Ideal candidate has five (5) or more years of experience in the following :
- Fire scene investigations
- Collection of evidence
- Interviewing witnesses
- Report writing
- Testifying in court
Minimum Qualification
Associate degree in Fire Science from an accredited college or university and four (4) years of experience in the fire service to include Code Enforcement, fire investigations, or law enforcement. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and / or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required educations and experience.

Employment Requirements
Employment is subject to background check and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver¿s License with no limitations or restrictions. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must obtain IFSAC Inspector I certification within the first year of hire.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in the field and in office setting. Work is performed in all types of inclement weather conditions, low lighting conditions, and exposure to stressful situations. Extensive personal computer and phone usage, walking distances, bending, stooping, standing for long periods of time and lifting as much as 50 lbs. Extensive state travel in agency issued vehicle is required.
