The State Investigator position ensures the enforcement of the Motor Carrier Act, the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) Rules, The Ambulance Standards Act and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Act Regulations, including conducting field inspections and investigations.
Prepares reports, testifies and makes recommendations on transportation issues through prepared written and oral testimony in regulatory proceedings.

Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, Public Administration, Criminology, or other related field, with two (2) years of experience in accounting, auditing, and investigation, or insurance adjusting and investigating or investigative report writing. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
This position is designated a safety sensitive position. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing.
Business reference checks and driver's license verification are also required, and employment is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required.
Extensive vehicle operation and some travel required.

- Conducts independent safety audits and inspections on motor carriers according to state statutes and NMDOT regulations to ensure public safety. Reviews inspection results with motor carriers; provides motor carriers with detailed written compliance report including the results of inspection and recommendations on compliance issues. (30%)
- Investigates and responds to complaints against motor carriers. Interviews and obtains statements from suspects and potential witnesses and collects other evidence relevant to the complaint; evaluates and synthesizes information gathered during investigation; prepares detailed investigation reports. (50%)
- Provides expert reports and testimony in hearings based on results of investigations and knowledge of motor carrier statutes and regulations and enforcement matters. (10%)
- Processes and tracks compliance orders issued by the Secretary and other related duties relative to Motor Carrier Act compliance and enforcement matters. (5%)
- Assists in training other staff members on motor carrier inspections and/or investigations. (5%)
