The mission of the New Mexico State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (NMSP CVE) bureau is to promote safety on New Mexico highways by providing law enforcement traffic services to the monitoring public, to ensure the safe and legal operation of Commercial Motor Vehicles, and to prevent the introduction of Illicit contraband into New Mexico while facilitating trade. The ultimate goal of the NMSP CVE is to reduce crashes involving Commercial Motor Vehicles. NMSP CVE Officers and Transportation Inspectors conduct Commercial Motor Vehicle inspections at fixed and roadside locations.
Why does the job exist?
The purpose of this position is to inspect and enforce state and federal rules on Commercial Motor Vehicles. The job exists to ensure safe and legal Commercial Motor Vehicle Operations through inspections and enforcement also to detect driver safety, weight, and oversize violations on Commercial Motor Vehicles to ensure compliance with applicable New Mexico State and federal laws.
How does it get done?
Transportation Inspectors conduct safety inspections on Commercial Motor Vehicles. During these safety inspections a Transportation Inspector can Identify If a Commercial Motor Vehicle is in compliance with the state and federal rules and regulations. Transportation Inspectors have the authority to place a Commercial Motor Vehicle and their drivers out of service for serious violations. This is performed by conducting comprehensive Inspections on vehicles using observations, various tools and specialized equipment.

The customers are the Commercial Trucking Industry, Department of Public Safety, Department of Transportation and the general public of the State of New Mexico.

Minimum Qualification
High school diploma or equivalent and one (1) year general work experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling one (1) year may substitute for the required experience. Must successfully complete North American Standards certification.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain CVSA certification in North American Standard Level I; Hazardous Material/ Transportation of Dangerous Goods; Cargo Tank; and Other Bulk Packaging inspections. If the candidate does not possess this certification at the time of hire, successfully completing the CVSA certification at the time(s) offered by the Department of Public Safety, and successful completion of the exam(s) within two attempts, as set forth in policy. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must have no felony convictions. Employment is subject to a pre-employment background check and is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office and field setting with significant sitting, lifting, dragging, bending, kneeling, standing, walking, crawling and driving and with exposure to stressful situations, noise and uncooperative subjects. Performs duties in all types of inclement weather conditions.
