Buncombe County Family Court seeks a qualified individual to work directly with non-custodial parents eligible for the Access and Visitation Program to remove barriers that prevent them from visiting their children. Â The successful candidate will explain local procedures to assist non-custodial parents from the Western Region with navigating court, accessing community resources and connecting with local services to help them increase the amount of time spent with their children and enhance their role as parents.

Duties include but are not limited to the following

  • Screen and assess applicants eligible for the program.
  • Assist clients in identifying available court paperwork and legal information.
  • Maintain client files and contacts.
  • Process and submit monthly and yearly reports.
  • Facilitate educational classes regarding the emotional needs of children.
  • Market the Access and Visitation program to community partners.
  • Make recommendations to program participants about available community resources.
  • Work closely with district court staff, judges, and custody mediators.
  • Participate in statewide coordinator meetings and follow grant requirements.

This position is in the Family Court Office of the courthouse in Asheville and reports to the Court Manager.  It will be primarily in-person at the courthouse with some flexibility to work remotely.  Work hours are between 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday as determined locally by the applicant and supervisor.  Some night and weekend work may be required to attend community meetings, workshops, training, and other presentations. Â

Knowledge of: Â NC court processes, particularly family and child support courts; available community resources, and child and family dynamics.

Skills in:Â Â interviewing to obtain information in person or by telephone; conducting individual and multi-part consultations; case management; building and maintaining community partnerships; public speaking; resource development; and MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Ability to:Â communicate effectively orally and in writing; giving presentations; establish a rapport with clients and colleagues; multi-task; problem solve; develop new products and groups to accomplish program goals; and work with various organizations and committees to accomplish program objectives.Â

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in a human services field such as psychology, social work, sociology, counseling, or criminal justice and one (1) year of experience in a human services field or the court system; or an associate's degree in a human services field plus three (3) years of equivalent experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.Â
