What are the responsibilities and job description for the Correctional Programs Supervisor position at State of North Carolina?

This position is located at Hyde Correctional Institution in Hyde County, NC.  This position will coordinate offender activities and support security operations.    The primary programs areas are recreation and support counseling.  Work involves considerable contact with community agencies to enrich programs and establish new programs.  Work under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders who can become physically violent and verbally abusive.  Be capable of defending oneself against attack by violent persons.  Communicate effectively in verbal and written form with staff, offenders, and the general public.  Conduct continuous visual and audio surveillance of assigned work area.  Accurately operate various office machines, prepare written reports and forms which accurately reflect information reviewed from various sources.  Demonstrate and instruct offenders in the proper safe use of tools, equipment, and supplies.  Review, analyze and evaluate various documents and behavioral data gathered from interviews, written documentation, and personal observation.  Perform crisis interventions and routine counseling to include suicide prevention.  Effectively train, observe, evaluate, and supervise subordinate staff in their duties and responsibilities.  Account for supplies and equipment.  Develop, implement, and manage Correctional Programs.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.

As of January 1, 2025, there are new increase adjustments to the state pay plan which were approved by the State Human Resources Commission, effective January 1, 2025. The new salary range will be $37,782.00 - $66,120.00. Prior applicants will remain under consideration and do no need to reapply.

The salary grade for this position is NC08 (Salary Range: $37,782 - $66,120). State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess the following:

Documented knowledge of supportive counseling techniques

Documented knowledge of services available to individuals from the community and other public and private programs

Bachelor s degree in a human services or criminal justice field from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in corrections or related work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 19,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving the lives and property of its citizens through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes State Prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as the division of Community Supervision. Other divisions include Administration, Compliance and Accreditation, Comprehensive Health Services, Internal Affairs and Intelligence Operations, Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission, and Rehabilitation & Reentry.  

The Division of Institutions employs over 19,000 staff, operates 56 institutions and is responsible for the care and custody of approximately 30,000 incarcerated individuals across North Carolina. Our division categorizes the institutions into 3 custody levels, which include minimum, medium, and close.  The Division of Institutions has a duty to provide a secure and safe environment along with the proper care and supervision for every individual, in our custody.

  • Per NC General Statute 143B-972.1 (Download PDF reader) (Download PDF reader), applicants hired into a position certified as a criminal justice officer or justice officer are required to electronically submit fingerprints to the NC State Bureau of Investigation for a state and national criminal history record check and enrollment in the FBI’s Next Generation Identification System: Criminal Justice Record of Arrest and Prosecution Background Service (“RAP Back”).  This is in addition to submitting fingerprints during the application process.
