The NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services provides services that promote and improve agriculture, agribusiness, and forests; protect consumers and businesses; and conserve farmland and natural resources for the prosperity of all North Carolinians. The Department employs approximately 2000 employees.
The primary purpose of the Grade A Section is to ensure, through inspections and analysis, that food products are wholesome and properly labeled to preserve a safe food supply.
Serves as an Agricultural Compliance Officer I in the Grade A Section of the Food & Drug Protection Division. The position will primarily be responsible for working with compliance on dairy products. Evaluate inspection reports from Specialists; identify any violations of current laws and regulations; review product labels for compliance; recommend to the supervisor the appropriate regulatory response; draft correspondence to industry detailing inspection and sample violations; respond to phone inquiries regarding proposed business operations and consumer complaints; respond to general inquiries from public, media, and regulated industry regarding food safety, programs and regulations, as well as inquiries from local, state, and federal agencies regarding programs and inspection jurisdiction; assign report results to impacted parties. Sampling of raw and finished dairy products, single service items, and water systems. Certification and inspection of milk tankers, hauler samplers, and plant samplers. Lead state and nationwide recalls, if product adulteration or misbranding is detected; participate in educational / outreach programs and represent the Department and division at industry meetings to disseminate information regarding the department and division programs.
This is a regional / home-based based position. Work territory consists of the following counties : Burke, Cleveland, Gaston, Henderson, Lincoln, McDowell, Catawba and Caldwell. A state vehicle will be provided.
Candidate must :
1) reside within a county in the territory or
2) reside in NC, within 20 miles, or 30 minutes of any of the counties within the territory OR
3) relocate at own expense, to one of the counties within the territory within four months of employment

While a license or certification is not required for this position, the incumbent must be eligible to be commissioned as an Officer of the United States Department of Health and Human Services under Section 702(a) of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.
MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES :
Experience in public health and the dairy industry. Working knowledge of the FDA Pasteurized Milk Ordinance.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
You may qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience, either through years of education or years of directly related experience, or a combination of both.
Bachelor's degree in chemistry, microbiology, food science, or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in food and / or dairy industry, research or compliance work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
