Program Overview
The Smithfield Resident Engineer’s Office oversees the management, inspection, and administration of road and bridge construction projects within Johnston and Wayne counties. This department ensures that all projects comply with state and federal standards, including quality control, safety regulations, and contractual requirements. Responsibilities include performing on-site inspections, conducting material sampling and testing, and coordinating with contractors to maintain schedules and resolve project issues. The office also manages documentation, reporting, and budgeting for projects, ensuring accountability and transparency. By delivering high-quality infrastructure, the department plays a crucial role in enhancing transportation networks and supporting community growth.
Job Summary: The Smithfield Resident Engineer’s Office is seeking a motivated intern to assist with road and bridge construction projects in Johnston and Wayne counties. This position offers hands-on experience in project inspection, material sampling and testing, and contract administration. Interns will work 40 hours per week in a dynamic, outdoor environment, contributing to critical infrastructure projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist Assistant Resident Engineers and Project Inspectors with on-site inspections of road and bridge construction projects.
- Perform material sampling and testing to ensure compliance with project specifications.
- Support contract administration tasks, including documentation, reporting, and record-keeping.
- Collaborate with Office Administrative personnel to track project progress and manage paperwork.
- Monitor construction activities to ensure adherence to safety protocols, schedules, and standards.
Qualifications:
- Education: Currently pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
- Skills:
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow procedures.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Comfortable working in outdoor environments and exposure to varying weather conditions.
- Basic knowledge of construction practices and materials is preferred but not required.
Work Environment: This is an outdoor-focused position requiring time on active construction sites. The role involves exposure to the elements, including heat, cold, and varying terrain.
Schedule and Compensation:
- Hours: 40 hours per week.
- Compensation: 25% of time allocated for performing inspections, material sampling/testing, and contract administration tasks.

- Must be a currently enrolled full-time student in a bachelors, masters, or professional level program at an accredited or recently graduated from a North Carolina Historically Black College/University (HBCU) or Minority Serving Institution (MSI) within the past three years.
- 24 credit hours completed.
- Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 (on 4.0 scale)
- Has legal right to work in the U.S. and do not need sponsorship
