This Marine Fisheries Technician coordinates with the Marine Fisheries Technician II positions to complete both fisheries dependent, and fisheries independent sampling programs. This position supports the district biologist with duties that pertain to finfish and fisheries management. These include fisheries dependent and independent programs, as well as any other division-wide programs that are all an integral part of management needs. This position coordinates with many Marine Fisheries Technician I positions to ensure they perform the required administrative duties correctly and in a timely manner. This position is also responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of sampling gear necessary for biological sampling and will maintain Division boats and vehicles.

The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) is responsible for the stewardship of the state’s marine and estuarine resources. The DMF’s jurisdiction encompasses all coastal waters and extends to 3 miles offshore. Agency policies are established by the nine-member Marine Fisheries Commission and the Secretary of the Department of Environmental Quality. North Carolina is a member of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council, the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council, and the National Shellfish Sanitation Program. Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for scheduling and completing both fisheries dependent and fisheries independent sampling programs with the other technicians in the Wilmington regional office.
- Coordinate with the other technicians to ensure the proper use of sampling gear and program documentation for identifying, weighing, tagging, and examining reproductive conditions of shellfish and finfish in the field and the laboratory.
- Work with the other technicians to record, compile, submit and verify all biological data taken from fisheries dependent and independent sampling activities.
- Responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of sampling gear necessary for biological sampling and will maintain and operate Division boats and vehicles
