What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical Laboratory Technologist II position at State of North Carolina?


50% Performing Laboratory Testing 

This position must be capable of performing highly complex MSMS procedures while following proper standard and universal precautions on clinical specimens from newborns for the detection of amino acid disorders, fatty acid oxidation disorders, organic acidurias, and lysosomal storage disorders. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Punch initial, repeat, elevated specimens, PKUs, PTs, and special request samples taking care to ensure patient ID and specimen quality. 

  • Prep specimens for all MSMS testing following the established SOPs, ensure accurate volumes and precise incubation times prior to loading samples. 

  • Performing daily, weekly, monthly, and as needed maintenance to ensure optimal instrument performance. 

  • Analyzing data and reporting initial, repeat, PKU and elevated trays for all MSMS assays, ensuring all results are accurate and meet quality control parameters. 


10% Quality Assurance 

Maintain quality assurance in the laboratory by completing competencies and quarterly proficiency specimens, reviewing and contributing to SOPs for new and existing test methods and complying with all CLIA and SLPH requirements. Maintain accurate specimen data through QA studies, QC review, and Result Monitoring.

  • Complete monthly QC Reviews. 

  • Assist with Instrument Comparisons every 6 months and compile documentation for supervisory and management review. 

  • Assist with Kit Lot Verification and establishing QC Ranges

  • Receive, log-in, oversee and ensure laboratory testing of PT specimens, review PT data, review data with supervisor, and assist with maintaining PT documentation in Lab. 

  • Temperature monitoring 

  • Complete Pipette & Timer Calibrations, and maintain documentation is maintained in Lab 

  • Complete Monthly Review of Smart-Vue Report, and maintain documentation in Lab– 

  • Provide instrument troubleshooting assistance, call service support when needed, and maintain service documentation in Lab. 

  • Review Reagent Logs and Maintenance Logs, created updated logs, document missed documentation, and store completed logs. 

  • Develop SOPs for new processes and update existing SOPs as needed.

  • Identify Non-Conforming Events and complete NCE documentation as needed 


10% Quality Improvement

Participate in quality improvement projects to onboard new testing and enhance services provided by NBS MS/MS Laboratory.

  • Participate in validations to include planning for implementation, preparing, and running validation studies, compiling data, and designing workflows for the laboratory. 

  • Write method validation plans. 

  • Coordinate validation studies to include acquiring necessary resources to perform testing (reagents, specimens, QC, etc). 

  • Analyzing validation data and compiling results for presentation to administration. 

  • Provide training on new methodology to staff.


10% Safety 

This position needs to ensure a safe work environment through the following measures. 

  • Participating in required annual laboratory safety programs. 

  • Using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and engineering controls. Ensuring work stations comply with health and safety regulations of the laboratory. 

  • Keeping up with good laboratory practice (GLP). 

  • Ensure all instruments and specimens are properly handled. 

  • Demonstrating a strong work ethic with ability to pay attention to detail. 

  • Ensuring a responsible teamwork spirit so that the safety of laboratory workflow is maintained. 


10% Other Duties Assigned 

The General Supervisor, in consultation with other General Supervisors and/or the unit manager, may request additional duties of this position to maintain operations. Such duties may include but are not limited to the following: 

  • Cross training in other NBS laboratories to maintain operations and TAT. 

  • Retrieving samples 

  • Operating and evaluating instrumentation. 

  • Training other personnel

  • Must have demonstrated experience in clinical laboratories, including mass spectrometry testing with a strong understanding of the theoretical principles involved in liquid chromatography, flow injection analysis, and tandem mass spectrometry
  • Must have demonstrated experience in analytical troubleshooting skills and correcting breakdowns in test procedures and instrumentation.
  • Must be able to understand and interpret large data sets for trending analysis.
  • Must have demonstrated superb organizational skills and attention to detail that will allow them to coordinate multifaceted testing activities
  • Must be capable of working independently with minimal supervision, to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.
  • Must be capable of working with a high degree of precision and accuracy to produce quality laboratory data.
  • Must have good communication skills to relay information to laboratory staff and clients and have some supervisory or leadership skills so they are capable of supervising staff in the absence of the laboratory supervisor.
  • Considerable knowledge of biochemical pathways monitored in metabolism.
  • Considerable knowledge of safety procedures for working in a hazardous environment.
  • Working knowledge of the state laws and regulations pertinent to the analytical regulatory work being performed.
  • Must have the ability to train others in performing laboratory procedures.
  • Demonstrates strong and thorough documentation skills with an understanding of good laboratory documentation practices.
  • Must have demonstrated experience in problem solving and critical thinking skills.

Bachelors degree in medical laboratory technology, chemistry or a biological science from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in a medical laboratory in the assigned area; 
OR
Associate s degree in medical technology from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of medical laboratory experience; 
OR
Completion of a certified laboratory assistant course in medical technology or a comparable course from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of medical laboratory experience; 
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience.
