This posting represents five (5) Transportation Worker II vacant positions located in Surry County Maintenance Unit, Division 11. Positions 60021777, 60021795, 60021804, 60021835, and 60021843 will be filled from the same pool of applicants. All applicants will be considered for all five (5) positions.
 These positions are located at the Surry County Maintenance Unit in Division 11. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair and construction of State maintained roads. Work includes installing traffic and erosion control devices, operating a variety of hand and power tools, clearing right of way, performing preventive maintenance and repairs to pavements, shoulder maintenance, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, ditching and shrubbing, and flagging traffic. Additional duties include inventorying and tracking quantities used of materials, performing manual labor tasks, and the operation of assigned heavy equipment. Applicants must have the ability to operate a small tandem dump truck. Work involves shoveling, raking, sweeping, walking and standing for long periods of time; and be subjected to all types of uneven terrain. Workers will be exposed to all types of weather and extreme temperature conditions. Employees must have the ability to lift and carry up to 80lbs repeatedly. Position also requires visual acuity. This position is subject to emergency callback, scheduled night work, and out of town travel during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.

The selected candidates must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation. Safety toe shoes are required for this position.

- Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures policies.
- Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies.
- Experience in one of the following: pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal, ditch maintenance or asphalt patching.
- Experience in snow and ice removal operations.
- Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper.Â
