This posting is for a Transportation Worker III for the Rowan County Maintenance office located in Salisbury, NC. Work includes installing traffic and erosion control devices involved in road maintenance and construction activities, operating a variety of hand and power tools, clearing right of way, repairing pavements, assisting with pipe installation and other drainage tasks, inventorying materials, operating heavy equipment, and various other assigned tasks. Applicants must have the ability to operate a small tandem dump truck. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, shoveling, raking, asphalt, flagging traffic, ditching, and shrubbing. This position may be subject to emergency callback and scheduled night work during adverse weather or extreme circumstances. The employee will be expected to work in emergency situations and inclement weather. Â

The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.
Safety-toed shoes required.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

- Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices.
- Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations, as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew.
- Experience in snow and ice removal operations.
- Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer, or sweeper.
