What are the responsibilities and job description for the X-Ray Machine Inspector position at State of North Carolina?

**As of January 1, 2025, the new salary range will be $48,222.00 - $84,388.00**

The Health Physicist l - X-Ray Machine Inspector position works independently to conduct inspections, investigations and evaluate various types of X-Ray machines in various environments, to determine compliance with the North Carolina Regulations for Protection Against Radiation. Prepares detailed and technical reports of inspection findings, tracks findings and reviews records submitted for compliance. Serves as a member of the State Emergency Response Team as required to maintain Homeland Security. Attends continuing education classes and training to maintain current knowledge of radiologic effects and agency needs. Audits radiological hazards, unsafe practices, incidents, and unusual occurrences and recommend methods for maintaining radiation dose As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA). Responsible for maintaining current inspection and registration databases.

The Division of Health Services oversees medical, mental health and adult care facilities, emergency medical services, and local jails. We check to see that people receiving care in these facilities are safe and receive appropriate care. We make certain that medical buildings are built only when there is a need for them.

Listed below are the knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) associated with the position.  These KSAs, along with the minimum education and experience listed, are required in order to be deemed "eligible" for the position therefore you must provide supporting information, within the body of your application, to demonstrate your possession of each KSA listed. 

Qualified applicants must possess, and application must clearly reflect work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Working knowledge of the biological effects, principles, and physics of radiation, practice standards and principles of radiation in medicine, Industry, education, and research.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in properly accessing and handling technically difficult and controversial areas
  • Working knowledge of radiation machines and radiation survey and testing instrumentation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of technical writing and reporting related to radiation safety.
  • Experience working with regulatory agencies or in state compliance and in emergency response activities related to radiologic hazards.
  • Currently qualified and in good standing with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) in Radiology, with advanced modalities.

Bachelor's degree in nuclear science, physical, or environmental science; health/medical physics, or radiologic science from an appropriately accredited institution; 
OR
an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Requirement Valid North Carolina Driver s License.

  • If applicants earned college credit hours but did not complete a degree program, they must attach an unofficial transcript to each application to receive credit for this education.
