Primary Purpose of this Position

Do you enjoy working outdoors planting and maintaining trees? The North Carolina Zoo is seeking a self-motivated and team-oriented Arborist to join its Arbor Team. Position performs daily maintenance of Zoo's tree collection throughout its grounds, animal habitats, and off-site locations. Responsibilities will encompass thorough knowledge of exterior landscape, tree collections, and the use of tree climbing harness and ropes, aerial lift devices including boom lifts, scissor lifts, and bucket trucks. The position, under the supervision of an Arbor Grounds Supervisor II, is responsible for tree maintenance/landscape construction, team leading/projects, equipment operation, record keeping and public relations. In addition, the position will interact with guests to answer questions and provide information requiring a thorough knowledge of the tree collection.  Â

Position/Physical Requirements

  • Must pass Pre-Employment Physical Assessment
  • Must be able to climb trees using tree climbing harness and ropes.
  • Must be able to perform the physical demands of the job for extended and irregular periods, under adverse conditions in all extremes of weather.
  • Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
  • Required participation in the Zoo's occupational health program.
  • Must be able to lift between up to 30 pounds of aggregate material to a height of 18 inches and transport it laterally a distance 4.5 feet on a frequent basis.
  • Position is considered "Essential/Mandatory Staff" and required to work on adverse weather days and during zoo emergencies.

Qualified candidates must have or be able to

  • Proven knowledge of tree identification, condition/health and maintenance procedures used in landscape installation and maintenance.
  • Proven experience with the operation of light and/or heavy equipment such as bobcats, backhoes, and aerial lift/or devices.
  • Experience with computers for research, data entry and/or record keeping.

Management Preference

  • Prefer tree climbing experience
  • Experience organizing and planning projects, reading landscape plans and utility maps, and identifying tree species.
  • Ability to climb trees following safety guidelines.

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma

AND

two years of progressive experience in horticultural work;

OR

Associate's degree in agriculture and natural resources, greenhouse and grounds maintenance, horticulture technology, landscape gardening or closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution;

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience.Â

Necessary Special Qualifications

May require North Carolina Commercial Driver's License.

Veteran's and National Guard Preference
