What You'll Do:

The Ohio Industrial Commission, Akron Regional Office, is seeking a knowledgeable professional to assist the Regional Hearing Administrator. The successful candidate will demonstrate a high level of attention to detail and organization, clear communication and critical thinking skills. In addition, this position requires the ability to work independently to solve problems, manage time effectively and meet established deadlines. Under general direction of the Regional Hearing Administrator (HA) serves as assistant:

  • Provides administrative support (routine & non-routine);
  • Reviews claims & correspondence to independently make non-legal decisions to ensure compliance with all workers’ compensation laws, IC / BWC rules, policies & procedures as they relate to HA responsibilities (.52/.522 relief, continuances, cancellations, subpoenas, suspension, depositions & interrogatories, permanent total disability (PTD) issues, pre-hearing conferences (PHC) & emergency hearings, exposure claims, etc.);
  • Ensures necessary steps are taken to achieve resolution of requests including generating the appropriate correspondence (compliance letters, notices);
  • Reviews & updates relevant applications / systems (CAS, Case Manager, ECM, Action Documents Upload, Action Items, etc.);
  • Contacts parties to the claim (injured worker, employer, representatives, BWC) by phone or email to obtain needed information to process requests;
  • Monitors HA Case Manager baskets to ensure requests are processed timely;
  • Provides work direction to AP1s or to other HAs, as needed;
  • Schedules emergency hearings locating available docket space & contacting parties for mutual agreement of date & time;
  • Generates hearing notice & notifies involved hearing officer, HA, etc.;
  • Reviews HA procedures for currency advising HA & Claims Support of needed changes;
  • Drafts HA responses to inquiries & complaints from IW’s, employers, representatives, etc., concerning HA claims activities;
  • Must conduct themselves professionally at all times and in accordance with the IC’s standards of customer service which require employees to act in a respectful and impartial manner while providing accurate information and timely issue resolution and abiding by the agency’s Confidential Personal Information Policy

Qualifications
36 mos. trg. or 36 mos. exp. in business administration, management science or public administration. If assigned to operate vehicles regulated by Section 4506.01 of Revised Code, applicants must also have valid commercial driver's license.

  • Or completion of undergraduate core program in business administration, management science or public administration; 12 mos. trg. or 12 mos. exp. in supervisory, administrative &/or managerial position which involved limited research & public contact. If assigned to operate vehicles regulated by Section 4506.01 of Revised Code, applicants must also have valid commercial driver's license.

  • Or completion of undergraduate core program in academic field commensurate with program area to be assigned per approved Position Description on file; 12 mos. trg. or 12 mos. exp. in supervisory, administrative, managerial &/or staff position which involved limited research & public contact. If assigned to operate vehicles regulated by Section 4506.01 of Revised Code, applicants must also have valid commercial driver's license.

  • Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.

Supplemental Information

This position is filled through an assessment consisting of a structured interview. The interview will be administered in person at the Akron Regional Office.

The hourly wage for this position is not negotiable. For applicants who are not current State of Ohio employees, the starting wage will be the hourly rate listed on this posting. Successful employees will move up a step in the salary range within one year, and in most cases within four to six months, with subsequent step increases occurring annually.

For internal applicants, the position will be filled pursuant to legislation or the provision of the OCSEA/AFSCME Contract.
