What are the responsibilities and job description for the BPS Non-Certified Basic Class III Officer position at State of South Carolina?
Patrols assigned buildings to deter and/or detect violations, maintains order and enforces state statutes and regulations, exercises arrest powers and testifies in court, investigates disturbances, and determines cause and participants.
Provides administrative duties to include proper use of radio and telephones, accurately records information, completes reports and documents, and disseminates information in a timely manner. Must possess a working knowledge and understanding of the requirements of state statutes and policies and procedures of the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.
Provides physical security, protective services, and eliminates safety hazards for all persons including the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, their families and other persons in designated buildings jurisdiction of the Bureau of Protected Services. Officers will man security checkpoints while designated buildings are open to the public.
Establishes and maintains a positive and objective working relationship with co-workers, the general public and other law enforcement agencies.

Minimum Requirements:
- Must possess a high school diploma
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Must be a resident of South Carolina and have a valid South Carolina driver's license prior to the effective date of hire.
- Non-Certified Advanced Class III officers will be required to attend the Police Academy.
Selected applicants will be required to submit to an extensive background check to include; credit check, criminal history, driver's record, history of drug use, a polygraph examination and take a urinalysis test to screen for illegal substances prior to appointment. The background investigation will consist of contacting ALL of your former employers, and at the due time your current employer.
Please note that if you answer "NO" on the state application to the question asking "May we contact this employer?" this will not allow DPS to conduct a thorough background investigation and you will not move forward in the process. Candidates must meet 20/20 vision standards OR no more than 20/200 corrected to 20/100 or below. Candidates must be capable of distinguishing, without corrections, three colors: green, yellow and red.
Upon successful completion of the minimum training requirements, applicant will be required to complete advanced training covering the following items:
- Operation of X-Ray and Magnetometer
- Suspicious Package Recognition and response procedures
- Use of Force Review

Starting Salary - Non-Certified Basic Class III Limited Duty officers [$46,087]

A copy of your high school diploma or state GED certificate, a copy of your DD-214 (member 4) military discharge (if applicable), a copy of your birth certificate (or naturalization certificate) and a copy of your South Carolina driver's license (you will also need the official original copies of any out of state driver's license records you have held in any other state within the past five (5) years).
