Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Facilities Management, the Director of Facilities Design and Development performs project planning, design development, procurement and installation activities related to the preservation, refurbishment and construction of facilities on the Winthrop University campus.
Oversees the interior design aspects of the university’s renovation, refurbishment, construction and relocation projects.
Oversees the design process for the university’s instructional, commercial, residential and recreational spaces in accordance with accepted design aesthetics.
Works on in-house project development and refurbishment in conjunction with Facilities Management staff.
Assists the Associate Vice President with activities related to maintenance and repair of the President’s House and other special projects related to the Board of Trustees and special events.

Oversees the interior design aspects of the university’s renovation, refurbishment, construction and relocation projects.
- Finalizes all specifications and handles purchasing and procurement functions.
- Coordinates scheduling of vendors, including movers.
- Oversees installation to ensure project remains true to design.
- Monitors progress to ensure projects remain on track in terms of budget and deadlines.
Oversees the design process for the university’s instructional, commercial, residential and recreational spaces in accordance with accepted design aesthetics.
- Meets with faculty/staff requesting renovations/refurbishment to determine needs.
- Develops a design package for renovation and new construction projects, to include furniture, flooring, paint, lighting and other finishes.
- Presents design package to faculty/staff, as appropriate, to secure approval to proceed and discusses timeline and need for temporary personnel relocation.
- Develops a budget for each project.
- Provides feedback to the appropriate project manager on the activities of outside designers to ensure selected furniture and finishes are in line with campus requirements and aesthetic.
- Fills in as project manager as needed.
- Serves on architectural and engineering (A&E) and contractor selection committees.
- Actively participates in campus design review and project planning.
Works on in-house project development and refurbishment in conjunction with Facilities Management staff.
- Saves and re-purposes furniture, as appropriate.
- Assists with staff relocation between buildings or suites, as directed by campus leadership.
- Makes recommendations on campus facilities needing renovation or repairs.
Assists the Associate Vice President with activities related to maintenance and repair of the President’s House and other special projects related to the Board of Trustees and special events.
- Bachelor’ s degree in interior design or related field.
- Four years of experience in space planning and design.
- Experience managing interior design projects from programming to installation.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Knowledge of interior design and project management principles and best practices.
- Knowledge of antiques, period design, architectural styles and textiles.
- Exceptional organizational, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to meet deadlines and work within budget.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the general public.
- Sufficient technical skills to perform job duties.
- Experience with South Carolina state procurement.
- Experience working in higher education.
- Experience selecting furniture, flooring, paint, lighting and other finishes.
