Serve as a central point of contact for DPH's Occupant Protection Program for the purpose of conducting transportation safety programs, including but not limited to the Safe Kids Worldwide Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Technician certification and the CarFit Program. Obtain professional training and instructor certification to provide an in-person four-day CPS curriculum that requires both classroom instruction and physical activity in and around vehicles. Statewide travel is required in addition to some weekend and evening hours. Complete all pre-and-post administrative duties such as planning, scheduling, registering and working with other CPS Technicians, Injury Prevention Coordinators, and Instructors.
Work in coordination with program partners to plan, promote, and conduct educational presentations designed to increase knowledge and awareness of transportation safety in South Carolina, including but not limited to, explaining CPS law, occupant protection, and primary injury prevention strategies. Schedule meetings, prepare the agenda and meeting minutes and promote CPS educational materials across South Carolina.
Coordinate and conduct child safety seat inspections, monitor statewide inspection sites, and align events with other occupant protection and injury prevention programs. This includes attending community events especially in rural and underserved areas, setting up signage, tents, tables, and the ability to demonstrate the use of transportation safety and vehicle restraint systems to parents and caregivers. Driving a state vehicle and transporting equipment may be required.
Communicate clearly with internal and external partners, respond to administrative questions and requests, and distribute educational program materials. Monitor requests that will help the Occupant Protection program (a) establish CPS Inspection Stations and recruitment of new CPS Technicians, and to (b) provide technical assistance and support related to statewide traffic safety and injury prevention events. This includes all types of age and demographic groups in South Carolina.
Work as an active DPH team member to support the mission and vision of the organization. Ensure a positive customer service approach is applied to all designated duties, trainings, and assigned administrative tasks. Conduct other time-limited duties, as assigned.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
State Minimum Requirements : A bachelor's degree in health education, health promotion or a closely related field such as psychology, biology, sociology, education or physical education and health education experience.
Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
Agency Additional Requirements : A bachelor's degree in health education, health promotion, or a closely related field such as psychology, biology, sociology, education, or physical education and health education experience. May accept years of experience in lieu of education on a year-to-year basis especially for years employed as a first responder, motor vehicle traffic safety, and public safety position. Preferred candidate would be currently certified as a child passenger safety technician.

Preferred Qualifications
Currently certified as a child passenger safety technician or to applicants with additional years of work in the field of health education and safety programs.
Applicants should have experience presenting, reaching individuals of varying ages in a culturally competent manner. Position will be required to use Microsoft Office including PowerPoint or other training materials to explain a health safety issue (such as transportation safety).
