What are the responsibilities and job description for the Highway Maintenance Worker I: Small Equipment Operator (61035180) position at State of South Carolina?
Operates small equipment including dump trucks, forklifts, asphalt kettles, litter pickers, trailer mounted pipe washers, rollers < 4 tons, snow plows, spreaders, brine sprayers, self-contained sweepers to perform a variety of maintenance activities. Performs construction, repair, and preservation to roadside drainage ditches, shoulders, drainage structures and earth roadways using proper repair techniques. This work involves the use of hand or pneumatic-powered tools. Utilizes powered tools and hand tools to perform a variety of maintenance activities. Assists in the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone. Serves as a flagger to safely direct and control traffic in maintenance work zones. Picks up litter, debris, and dead animals. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations to include operating small duty equipment. May include being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
Physical Requirement: The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
