Performs a variety of tasks for the Limbing Crew related to maintenance operations including, but not limited to, cutting rights-of-way on highways and around bridges and structures, performing limb trimming operations, removing trees, removing obstructions, hauling debris and traffic control signs, etc. Assists other maintenance crews, as needed, with other maintenance operations to complete routine maintenance work and maintenance plans. Minimum business plan requirements include completing limbing operations in the area assigned for each fiscal year (1/5 of the county). The limbing crew is also required to assist the Mowing Crew with completing right-of-way cutting during the winter months. Operates heavy equipment such as backhoe, slope mower, and motor grader. In conjunction with highway and bridge maintenance activities, performs skilled highway maintenance worker functions and operates equipment such as limbing machine, chipper, dump trucks with trailers, etc. Assists in the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide. Assists in flagging traffic in work zones during roadway repair and limbing operations to control flow of traffic to protect workers, general public, and equipment. Flags traffic using sign board and/or hand-held flags. Operates small engine equipment such as chain saws, pole saws, and weedeaters as needed. Performs duties using manual labor in maintenance operations as needed. Conducts daily preventative maintenance activities on all assigned equipment and vehicles to ensure that equipment is greased and lubricated, proper coolant and oil (engine and hydraulic) levels are maintained, hoses and belts are inspected for deterioration, tires are properly inflated, and no leakages are present to get maximum utilization of equipment. Conducts pre-trip and safety inspections on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Assists in tracking and reporting daily work performed to supervisors, including specific accomplishments, work locations, equipment utilization, and quantity of materials used. Assists in emergency, on-call, or inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended 12-hour shifts. Operates both anti-icing and removal equipment (snow plows and sand and salt spreaders) during snow and ice response on highways and bridges. Performs other related duties as assigned. One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards.
