Operates heavy equipment such as slope mower, lowboy tractor, tractor with ditcher loader, excavator, motor grader, and backhoe in conjunction with highway and bridge maintenance operations. Operates pipe washer equipment to clean out drainage ditches and pipes. Installs, constructs, or repairs sideline and crossline pipe, driveways, and performs right-of-way clearing operations. Conducts daily preventative maintenance activities on all crew equipment to ensure that equipment is greased and lubricated, proper coolant and oil (engine and hydraulic) levels are maintained, hoses and belts are inspected for deterioration tires are properly inflated and no leakages are present. Assists with instructing crew members in safety practices such as flagging operations, wearing of safety equipment, vehicle safety, or job site hazards. Coordinates placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to South Carolina Department of Transportation Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide. Assists in producing daily records of work performed and materials used, records such as Highway Maintenance Management System and the maintenance requests and complaints forms. Conducts safety inspection on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Monitors the preventative maintenance program of equipment to ensure a routine maintenance schedule is followed and to monitor equipment use and wear to prolong equipment life. Operates both portable tank mounted salt brine anti-icing equipment and standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Operates tandem and single axle dump trucks with trailers, and lowboy truck tractor for hauling material and transporting equipment for maintenance and construction operations. Assists in emergency or inclement weather operations, may include being available for extended hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other duties as assigned.One (1) year of related work experience; or relevant education may substitute for the experience requirement. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commerical Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
