Job Responsibilities
Operates heavy equipment such as a backhoe, tractor with ditcher, motor grader, and the slope mower in conjunction with highway and bridge maintenance operations. Installs, constructs or repairs sideline and crossline pipe, driveways, and performs right-of-way clearing operations. Operates lowboy truck and tractor for hauling material and transporting equipment for maintenance and construction repairs. Conducts daily preventative maintenance activities on all crew equipment to ensure that equipment is greased and lubricated, tires are properly inflated, and no leakages are present. Assists with instructing crew members in safety practices such as flagging operations, wearing of safety equipment, vehicle safety, or job site hazards. Coordinates placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide. Assists in producing daily records of work performed and materials used, records such as HMMS and the maintenance requests and complaints forms. Conducts safety inspection on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Monitors the preventative maintenance program of equipment to ensure a routine maintenance schedule is followed and to monitor equipment use and wear to prolong equipment life. Operates both portable tank-mounted salt brine anti-icing equipment and standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Operates pipe washer equipment to clean out drainage ditches and pipes. Performs other duties as requested or assigned by supervisor including after-hour work, inclement weather operations, and assisting on-call personnel. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
