Hunting Island is South Carolina’s single most popular state park, attracting more than a million visitors a year, as well as a vast array of land and marine wildlife. Five miles of pristine South Carolina beaches, thousands of acres of marsh and maritime forest, a saltwater lagoon and ocean inlet are all part of the park’s natural allure.Hunting Island is home to the historic Hunting Island lighthouse, built in 1859 and rebuilt in 1875 after it was destroyed during the Civil War. A unique feature of the lighthouse is that it was constructed of interchangeable cast-iron sections so it could be dismantled should it ever need to be moved. Severe beach erosion made it necessary to relocate the lighthouse 1.3 miles inland in 1889.Job Purpose and Duties: Under general supervision, assists with the overall operation and maintenance of a State Park. Performs diversified duties as governed by general instruction, policies and standard operating procedures of the Department. May assume the responsibilities of the Park Manager in the absence of higher-level employees.1) Supervises and directs other full and part-time staff as directed by the Park Manager.2) Assists with administrative activities to include, but not limited to, receiving and documenting revenues, preparing reports and making payments in accordance with standard operating procedures. 3) Assists with the administrative activities to include, but not limited to, receiving and documenting revenues, preparing reports and making payments in accordance with standard operating procedures. 4) Assists with long and short term maintenance planning and provides required reports. Makes frequent inspections to assure satisfactory conditions. 5) Enforces park rules, regulations and policies within his/her authority. 6) Plans, directs and may conduct maintenance activities on grounds, facilities and equipment to ensure that they are maintained to the standards set forth by the Park Service. 7) Employee will be required to live in designated park housing to provide for security, safety and emergency response. 8) Practice and promote teamwork within the work unit/office, throughout the agency and with external agency stakeholders. Represents office as an active member on agency teams assigned throughout the year.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Associate degree in Park Management or related field with one (1) year of park ranger experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.Additional Requirements: 1) Position requires medium to heavy lifting, walking and standing on uneven terrain, crawling, and working at heights. Exposure to weather conditions, cleaning agents, and other materials used in maintaining park facilities and grounds. The position requires residency in park-provided housing. Ability to work a flexible work schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.2) Ability to communicate both orally and in writing. Ability to supervise others.3) Must posses a valid South Carolina Driver's License.
