The South Dakota Department of Health is hiring a full-time life safety code surveyor to join our Office of Licensure and Certification team to assist with protecting the safety of residents and patients in South Dakota's licensed health care facilities. This position will be responsible for review of construction contract documents for compliance with current health facilities standards; review of construction documents which are coordinated with the healthcare provider, architect, engineers, and local building official; evaluation of existing health care facilities, contract facilities, and other buildings as requested for compliance with Life Safety Code; and represents the SD Department of Health as the fire authority for health care facilities. This position requires frequent in-state travel is required for this position which typically involves two day trips each week with overnights.
Upon hire, life safety code surveyors will be provided mandatory prerequisite training and testing in order to conduct healthcare facility surveys independently. Training will be provided through the Office of Licensure and Certification.

Licenses And Certifications
- Bachelor degree in engineering or related field from an accredited institution. Bachelor degree in engineering preferred. However, applicants with experience in healthcare facilities management, emergency preparedness, biomedical equipment, or experience as a safety officer of other related field will be considered.
- Engineer applicants should have or be eligible to obtain a Professional Engineering license.
