Job Summary
The Division of Family and Community Health, Office of Lifespan Health is seeking a motivated member to join its team as the Newborn Screening Coordinator. This position is responsible for carrying out the day-to-day operations of the Newborn Screening (NBS) Program. The NBS Program is a statewide program administered by the Department of Health and mandated pursuant to SDCL 34-24-17 that each infant born in South Dakota shall be screened for metabolic, inherited, and genetic disorders. The DOH is responsible for outlining and overseeing processes for every step of newborn blood spot and hearing screening programs, with an intended goal of quickly identifying newborns who are in need of intervention, taking action before medical conditions develop or developmental delays occur.
NBS is not just a screening provided to newborns but a comprehensive system consisting of the screening, lab protocols, customer service, policy development and monitoring, medical provider education and technical assistance, being a liaison between the program and the IT system used for monitoring and tracking NBS, program evaluation, and continuous quality improvement. Thus, this position will work to develop partnerships, serve on advisory councils, and create and disseminate educational materials. This position reports to the CYSHCN Program Director.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have
A minimum of a bachelor's degree in public health, biological sciences, or health related field. An equivalent combination of experience, education and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities will be considered. The candidate must have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to work autonomously and as a contributing and supportive member of a team. Must use sound judgment, analysis, and discretion within the framework of defined policies and procedures The ideal candidate will be organized, plan, and set goals and priorities. Must be able to develop and maintain effective working relationships with healthcare partners, researchers, and community organizations. The ideal candidate will work cooperatively with their team to help achieve the Department of Health's public health strategic goals and demonstrate a commitment to representing the Department of Health's mission, vision, and values.
Knowledge Of
This position is eligible for Veterans’ Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
