Art Collections Registrar
Job Description:
The Utah Division of Arts & Museums is seeking a Registrar for the State of Utah Alice Merrill Horne Art Collection, which includes Fine, Folk, and Public Art collections. The registrar is an integral part of the exhibition, folk arts, visual arts and collections team, with the primary duty to use current technology to coordinate, record, and track the collection. The position is full-time, benefitted, with typical work hours onsite at the collection storage venue Monday through Friday. $23 - $35 hourly, DOE.
Key Responsibilities
- Process all acquisitions and deaccessions, including condition reporting, cataloging, legal, and other necessary documentation.
- Maintain collections digital asset system, update locations and other current collection information, conduct inventories.
- Oversee the outgoing and incoming loan program, including assisting with the Traveling Exhibition Program, Statewide Annual Exhibition, and Chase Home Museum.
- Process loan agreements, conduct site assessments, prepare condition reports, coordinate transportation, packing, and insurance.
- Coordinate photography of the art collection.
- Assist with conservation prioritization and coordinate conservation and framing efforts.
- Coordinate with the State of Utah risk management to ensure art collection and all loans are appropriately insured.
- Assist the Collections Manager with relocating the collections to the Museum of Utah storage space.
- Serve as the primary coordinator with DFCM on facility maintenance.
- Assist Public Art, Visual Arts, Folk Arts, Collections, and Traveling Exhibitions programs as needed.
- Participate in division-wide and department-wide projects.
- May coordinate volunteers, interns, students, seasonal staff or clients; including training, scheduling, delegation, monitoring, and reviewing work.
- Other duties as assigned.
Ideal Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have a working understanding of museum registration methods and best practices in general art collections management. This includes experience with collections digital asset systems, condition reporting terminology, and basic conservation and museum collections care practices. Candidate must possess strong organizational skills and demonstrate attention to detail, self-motivation, and the ability to work in a flexible environment. Knowledge of Utah artists, art history, and experience working with collections is desired. Experience with Argus Museum Collections Management Software desired. Graduate studies in art, museum studies, and/or a humanities-based field preferred.
Work Location
This position may be eligible for a hybrid of both in-office/hybrid work schedule (2 days a week required in office and any mandatory in office meetings) and remote work days (work must be performed in Utah). Our office is located at 310 S 500 W Salt Lake City, UT 84101. A position's eligibility for remote work is established by agency management and is subject to change at their discretion at any time and for any reason. Note: Under Administrative Rule R13-4 all work must be performed within the State of Utah. As such employees should either reside in Utah or be in the process of relocating to within 30 days of their start date.
