The Utah Department of Transportation is looking for a skilled and motivated person to fill our Electronic Technical Specialist II position with the Traffic Management Division’s Freeway Operations Maintenance Team in Salt Lake City, Utah. This group maintains the ITS devices for the Express Lanes, ramp metering system, and almost 800 Traffic Monitoring Stations (TMS) that collect traffic data statewide.

This is a journey-level electronic technical specialist position performing complex electronic tasks. In this position you will install, repair and maintain the various electronic equipment used by UDOT to Keep Utah Moving.

Principal Duties
As the Electronic Technical Specialist II, you will work in the field and perform electronic tasks including:
  • Installing and maintaining ITS equipment, including electronic devices, power, hardware, or software, etc.
  • Inspecting ITS and traffic signal equipment and systems to verify safety, maintenance, conditions, functions and quality.
  • Configure software for ramp meter controllers, traffic detection devices, Express Lanes lane controllers, wrong way driver's sites, and other equipment.
  • Operating, maintaining, calibrating and adjusting specialized equipment.
  • Troubleshooting and diagnosing problems, making adjustments, repairing and/or performing preventative maintenance on ITS equipment, or machinery, etc.
  • Performing preventative maintenance activities.
  • Maintaining accurate records and logs.
  • Wiring and rewiring electrical control equipment, circuits in signals, or other electrical systems.
  • Driving and operating a bucket truck.


Minimum Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must have:
  • At least two (2) years of professional work experience or electronics education (or a combination of both).
  • An International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level II certification.
  • A valid driver's license
  • A working knowledge that includes a combination of the following: electronics and electrical systems, traffic signal technology, and traffic signal construction.
  • A willingness and ability to be on-call and work after hours on a regular basis.
This position may be filled as an Electronic Technical Specialist I for applicants with less than two years of experience/education and those without an IMSA Level II certification.  You must have IMSA level I certification or ability to obtain within one year after hire AND obtain IMSA level II within two years.  Certification and training provided by UDOT.  

Salary Ranges:
Electronic Technical Specialist II: $28.47 - $37.02
Electronic Technical Specialist I:  $25.42 - $33.23

*Wage offers will be based on experience and education. Starting wage is $25.42 with no or limited related experience.

Preferences
Preference may be given to applicants with at least one of the following:
  • Associate's degree, or higher, in an electrical or electronic technology field OR equivalent experience
  • Journeyman Electrician license
  • IMSA level II certification
  • Experience troubleshooting through networks and solving network issues with a variety of traffic devices

Here is some information you should be aware of:
  • This position is required to be on-call and work after hours on a regular basis.
  • This position is subject to random drug and alcohol testing of employees after hire.  Please note: job offers to those who are not currently on the random drug list may be conditional pending drug test results.
  • Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g. working around operating machines, working with power voltages up to 600V or hazardous chemicals, etc.
  • Risks found in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations, e.g. working at heights of 100 feet, working in extreme outdoor weather conditions, etc.
  • Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.
  • Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Region Director/Group Leader.
