Job Summary:
We are seeking compassionate and dedicated individual as main support person for a young man with Down syndrome. Duties include providing essential care and support to allow him to connect with his community, maintain independence through skill learning and practice and when working, will be on site for assistance/monitoring of work related tasks. He is physically active, loves music, raising his chickens and goats, cooking and art. He is independent for self care and hygiene but needs occasional prompting/reminders.
Duties:
- Assist individual with daily activities that facilitate independence such as guidance/reminders of personal care, monitoring/helping of chores, cooking, self care skills.
- Provide companionship and emotional support
- Assist with meal preparation and ensure dietary needs are met
- Help encourage/monitor his light housekeeping tasks to maintain a clean and safe environment
- Accompany individual to medical appointments or social outings as needed
- Develop a clear understanding of the individual's strengths and basic needs to advocate on their behalf as needed
- Utilize a high level of clinical judgement and effective communication with individual's family/team
- Complete daily activity logs, add to life skills binder/activities and participate in daily communication with his family
Qualifications:
- Previous experience in supporting other individuals with developmental disabilities or caregiving is preferred but not required
- Creative, dependable and patient
- Ability to follow instructions and work independently as well as part of a team
- Compassionate nature and genuine desire to help others
- High school degree (or equivalent) is required
- Valid Driver's license and access to reliable vehicle required
- Clean background check
- Must be non-smoking as this individual is sensitive to cigarette smoke and is susceptible to respiratory infections
- Travel as required daily is likely as individual does have needs in the local community frequently; mileage is reimbursed while individual is in the vehicle.
