Overview

The Director of Nursing Services (DNS) is responsible for the day-to-day planning, administrative, and supervisory work involving the management of all aspects of gerontological nursing care services for the residents at the Vermont Veterans' Home (VVH), including the supervision of training programs for nursing care personnel.

Duties include, but are not limited to :

  • Reporting to the facility's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) or designee and the Board of Trustees (BOT) for the overall execution and coordination of the Home's nursing services.
  • Monitoring and evaluation of nursing care outcomes.
  • Providing oversight to all staff who provide care at the Home.
  • Establishing policies and procedures governing the conduct of nursing staff and ensuring nursing staff are held accountable for the care they provide.
  • Ensuring that policies and procedures are approved by the CEO and BOT related to nursing care services provided at the Home.
  • Follow the State's Collective Bargaining Agreement when implementing discipline.

The Nursing Services Director will actively participate in the Home's Quality Assurance Performance Improvement (QAPI) process, which requires attendance at QAPI meetings. The Director is responsible for reporting on the department's QAPI projects and regular participation in Performance Improvement Projects and VVH's Risk Meetings and Wound Rounds.

Additionally, the incumbent is responsible for oversight of VVH's care planning and interdisciplinary progress from admission through discharge, which includes evaluating care needs of current and prospective residents to ensure the facility can meet their individual needs. The Director will develop and implement an organized system of care which includes coordinating with various departments in the facility, and ensuring that nursing practices comply with State, Federal, and Veterans' Administration regulatory and legislative requirements.

The Director will hold regular staff meetings across all levels of the nursing department. It is vital that the incumbent is able to promote, establish, and maintain positive relationships with residents, families, staff, community, and other professionals. The incumbent is also responsible for developing and monitoring the nursing department's budget to include, but not limited to : hours of care per resident per day, staffing, supplies, and technological resources.

This is a full-time exempt position eligible for benefits. Salary is negotiable based on experience and qualifications

Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position, including Vermont and national criminal record checks, adult and child abuse registry checks, the Office of Inspector General exclusion database, and motor vehicle driving record checks where applicable.

Environmental Factors

Duties primarily performed in a clinical and office setting. Work may require travel off-site. Exposure to communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens, potentially physically and verbally violent patient population and other stressful situations may occur. May be required to work evenings, nights, weekends and extended shifts as the need arises.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) AND possession of licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Vermont or eligible to practice in the state of Vermont via a multi-state license AND at least five (5) years of experience in long-term care as a Director of Nursing, Charge Nurse, or Nursing Supervisor.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in Nursing.

Experience with geriatric nursing.

Veteran or experience with Veterans.

Special Requirements

Must possess licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Vermont or eligible to practice in the state of Vermont via a multi-state license. Licensure is a condition of employment.
