The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our Pacific Cascade Region as a Fire Training Coordinator. This position reports to the Wildland Fire District Manager and works under the guidance of state regulations, agency policies and procedures, applicable collective bargaining agreements, and agency strategic plans. This position performs professional work pertaining to the coordination of fire training and grant administration. This position serves as the region expert for wildfire training and is responsible for executing training and administering grants while adhering to a specific biennial budget. As the region training expert, they provide direct support to DNR employees, private contractors, and fire protection district personnel.
Duties
Responsibilities:
- Serves as the regional expert responsible for all aspects of the Regions wildland fire and prescribed fire-training program. Coordinates the Region wildland fire-training program for DNR employees and with fire protection districts, federal firefighting agencies, tribal firefighting agencies, and others. Maintains fire qualification database (IQS) to track fire certifications and qualifications. Including assessing employees’ training needs, developing training plans, and auditing fire training classes. Tracking fire training costs and helping keep the Region within training budget allotments. Coordinates with other regions and other agencies to schedule and attend needed fire classes.
- Prepares and regularly updates a prioritized training plan as needed to support budget requests and to promote the effective use of funding provided for training. Conducts fire training need assessments for region employees, including working with individuals and their supervisors to design a documented fire career path that includes the training and experience required to progress appropriately. Prepares annual summary of training and qualification accomplishments for region employees relative to goals. Issues NWCG Position Task Books, and red cards, and maintains training records for Region employees.
- Supervise 1-NRT3 in daily activities including training, fire business, and fire administration duties.
- Coordinates the development and implementation of the Region's Fire Prevention Plan and focuses on preventing human-caused fires through education and enforcement.
- Supports fire protection district wildland fire preparedness through region administration and coordination of grants and other programs for the acquisition of appropriate equipment (including personal protection equipment) and training.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Two years of professional work in wildland fire suppression, wildland fire training, or a closely related field including two years of experience with PMS 310-1, Incident Qualification System or Field Manager Course Guide, and working within the Incident Command System.
- Two years of supervisory experience.
- Ability to be effective and make sound decisions within a fast-paced work environment.
- A team leader who forms and maintains effective relationships with others that are based on trust and respect.
- Ability to work with potentially difficult external customers to minimize conflict and maintain good customer relationships.
- Ability to prioritize and perform multiple tasks concurrently, handle interruptions appropriately, return to incomplete tasks, and demonstrate cooperation and mutual respect.
- Ability to develop and instruct classes pertaining to wildland fire suppression activities, including knowledge of wildland fire behavior and fire line safety awareness.
- Proficiency in computer skills: word processing, spreadsheets, and ability to develop complex documents in support of the program objectives.

- The duties are primarily office-based, with opportunities to work in the field. The position is allowed to take fire assignments as qualified and able.
- This position requires occasional travel within the assigned geographic unit and other parts of the Region to meet with employees, other collaborators, and the public. Occasional travel, including overnight stays, may be required for training and other reasons.
- A valid unrestricted driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
- A bachelor’s degree in a natural resources field and at least two years of experience implementing a specific wildland fire program (the specific program is designated for each position).
- Current incident command system qualification at the NWCG Strike Team Leader and/or Task Force Leader.
- Experience developing and tracking a program budget.
- Experience in a wildland fire prevention program.
