The Opportunity
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Bridge Maintenance Specialist will:
- Clean, inspect, maintain, repair and/or replace bridges and structures such as expansion joints, abutments, caps, stringers, pilings, walkways, jersey rail, curbs, footings, walls, bents and bracing on tri-region eastside bridges.
- Construct forms, place rebar, pour and finish concrete.
- Fabricate and weld steel on structures.
- Inspect and perform preventative maintenance including sealing, deck sealing and waterproofing, and spot painting.
- Operate Class A, B, or C highway equipment, power/hand tools and special equipment such as man lifts and UBIT.
- Read, interpret, and follow specific permit agreements related to bridge work activities.
- Work with specialized equipment to access steel and clean using various hand tools, vacuums, vactors, and water trucks to flush surfaces.
- Attend safety meetings and job-related training.
- Communicate orally and in writing with employees, the public, TEF, and other crews.
- Ensure vehicle preventative maintenance, cleanliness, and repairs are addressed.
- Maintain material usage records, work reports, and other operational records.
Qualifications
To be considered at the BMS1, the following are required:
- A high school diploma, GED or equivalent.
- One (1) year of experience performing roadway maintenance, or construction experience in a heavy construction field with an emphasis in welding, steel fabrication, or construction carpentry.
To be considered at the BMS2, the following are required:
- A high school diploma, GED or equivalent.
- Two (2) years of experience performing roadway maintenance, or construction experience in a heavy construction field with an emphasis in welding, steel fabrication, or construction carpentry.
- Experience being committed to safety including proper use of personal protective equipment.
- Knowledge and ability to use a computer for time management, email, word documents, schedules, etc.
- A firm grasp on journey level skills with the ability to contribute to a team effort in a cooperative and collaborative manner to complete bridge repair tasks.
- Demonstrated ability to complete assigned tasks with a positive attitude and a willingness to complete all assigned task effectively and efficiently.
In addition to one of the above, following are also required at both levels:
- A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction, or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
- A valid Traffic Control/Flagging card with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD. Including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
- Experience being committed to safety including proper use of personal protective equipment.
- A firm grasp on journey level skills, with the ability to contribute to team effort in a cooperative and collaborative manner to complete all bridge repair tasks.
- Knowledge and ability to use a computer for time management, email, word documents, schedules, etc.
- Demonstrated ability to efficiently complete all assigned tasks with a positive attitude.
- Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency call-outs/stand-by.
- Ability to relocate tools, equipment, and materials weighing up to 50 pounds from one location to another in safely.
- Ability to climb ladders and work at heights exceeding 25 feet, over land or water.
- Ability to respond to assigned duty station with 45 minutes of an afterhours callout.
- Ability to travel throughout the state up to 80% of the time
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- Consistent work history and well round experience in multiple disciplines.
- A valid Traffic Control/Flagging card with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging.
Important Notes
- This position requires up to 80% of work out of town within region to include overnight stays on per diem.
- This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.
- This position is not eligible for remote work.
- In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. This position has been approved for in-training. The hiring manager is looking to hire at the Bridge Maintenance Specialist 2 level, however the in-training plan will allow candidates to be considered as a Bridge Maintenance Specialist 1, if not qualified at the highest level. The salaries for each level are:
- BMS1: $58,380 – $67,716 Annually
- BMS2: $62,892 – $72,924 Annually
