The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking two journey-level specialists to fill vacancies in Union Gap, WA. As members of the Region Wide Bridge Maintenance and Trades Crew, these positions will perform skilled trades work of inspecting, maintaining, and repairing all concrete, steel, and timber structures and regional facilities in South Central Region (SCR). The individuals in these roles must be able to recognize our customers and promote continuous improvement through effective and efficient use of State resources. Working on the Bridge Crew requires responsible, safety-minded individuals to perform skilled trades work and operate highway equipment and tools. These opportunities are perfect for those who enjoy working with their hands, knowing their work is done on roadways and in a variety of weather conditions.


What to Expect

These positions perform work that is often physical in nature and performed primarily outdoors and often next to high-volume, high-speed traffic that may require standing for extended periods of time. BMS2 may work at elevated heights above 25 feet over land or water. Work may also include traversing in rough, steep, and uneven terrain. Weekends and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled or call-out emergencies. These positions require up to 80% out of town work, which may include regular weekly trips with overnight stays on per diem. 


Among the varied range of responsibilities held within these roles, the Bridge Maintenance Specialists will:

  • Perform journey-level maintenance and repairs to structures and buildings such as concrete bridge decks, joints, girders, post tensioning cables, soffits, piers, columns, steel bridge decks, vertical and diagonal beams, timber bridge decks, X-braces, wheel rail, sidewalks, and handrail.
  • Fabricate steel components. 
  • Build forms, tie rebar, mix, pour and finish concrete; apply epoxy-based sealants.
  • Repair and or replace guardrail.
  • Fall trees, cut brush, from around bridge superstructures, columns, and abutments.
  • Design and set up traffic control for operations, and full road or bridge closures according to departmental and MUTCD standards. 
  • Perform traffic control such as manually flag traffic or signing for lane closures, road closures and detours; conduct moving and stationary traffic control operations using attenuator/buffer truck.
  • Act as a first responder at accident scenes, spills, or other emergency situations; coordinate traffic control and responses with external agencies.
  • Use rigging, staging, static lines, fall arrest harness and lanyards to be compliant with OSHA, and WISHA standards to complete work safely at heights.
  • Operate highway equipment, power tools and hand tools. Class A, B, or C equipment for maintenance operations.


Qualifications

These are Bridge Maintenance Specialist 2 (BMS2) positions. However, the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the position at a lower level (BMS1) depending on qualifications, providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal “in-training” plan.


To be considered at the BMS1, the following are required:

  • A high school diploma, GED or equivalent.  
  • One (1) year of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 1 or equivalent such as experience in roadway maintenance, heavy construction, carpentry, concrete, steel fabrication, or as a millwright.

To be considered at the BMS2, the following are required:

  • A high school diploma, GED or equivalent.  
  • Two (2) years of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 1 or, equivalent such as experience in roadway maintenance, heavy construction, carpentry, concrete, steel fabrication, or as a millwright.
  • Experience being committed to safety including proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Knowledge and ability to use a computer for time management, email, word documents, schedules, etc.
  • A firm grasp on journey level skills with the ability to contribute to a team effort in a cooperative and collaborative manner to complete bridge repair tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete assigned tasks with a positive attitude and a willingness to complete all assigned task effectively and efficiently.


In addition to one of the above, following are also required at both levels:

  • A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction, or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • A valid Traffic Control/Flagging card with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD. Including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire. 
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency call-outs/stand-by.
  • Ability to relocate tools, equipment, and materials weighing up to 50 pounds from one location to another in safely.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work at heights exceeding 25 feet, over land or water.
  • Ability to respond to assigned duty station with 45 minutes of an afterhours callout.
  • Ability to travel throughout the state up to 80% of the time


It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Journey level experience in one of the heavy construction trades, such as, carpenter, iron worker, fabricator, millwright, concrete cutter, equipment operator, industrial construction laborer.
  • Consistent work history and well round experience in multiple disciplines.

Important Notes 
  • This position requires up to 80% of work out of town within region to include overnight stays on per diem.
  • This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.  
  • This position is not eligible for remote work.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
  • This position may be subject to the drug and alcohol testing requirements of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA). For more information, please go to DOT Drug & Alcohol Testing
  • This position has been approved for in-training. The hiring manager is looking to hire at the Bridge Maintenance Specialist 2 level, however the in-training plan will allow candidates to be considered as a Bridge Maintenance Specialist 1, if not qualified at the highest level. The salaries for each level are:  
    • BMS1: $58,380 – $67,716 Annually 
    • BMS2: $62,892 – $72,924 Annually
