What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Equipment Technician 2 will:
- Generate reports from the Fleet Management System to identify service schedule.
- Perform PM on a wide variety of WSDOT equipment and vehicles to detect and repair safety items on equipment.
- Actively participate in the development and implementation of Pre-Activity Safety Plans (PASP).
- Promote a safe working environment and perform work in a safe manner, identity safety improvement opportunities.
- Analyze and diagnose electrical and mechanical problems.
- Perform repairs to shop and shop tools.
- Operate computer to maintain shop records, as well as to initiate work orders and order parts.
Qualifications
- Three (3) years of experience in the performance of preventative maintenance and repairs assisting a journey level mechanic. NOTE: Successful completion of vocational technical training in heavy equipment and/or industrial/commercial equipment repair, including welding, may substitute year for year for up to two (2) years of experience.
- One (1) year of experience as a journey-level mechanic maintaining and repairing heavy-duty equipment.
- Journey-level standing as a heavy equipment and/or industrial/commercial mechanic as demonstrated by completion of a recognized apprenticeship.
- Journey-level standing as recognized by a labor union.
In addition to one of the above, the following are also required:
- High school graduation, or possession of a GED certificate or equivalent.
- Possession of an unrestricted Class A CDL with N endorsement to legally operate vehicles in Washington State; or obtain within six (6) months of hire.
- Supply basic hand tools.
- Proficient in operating Windows based computers and software, such as MS Office Suite; virtual meeting software, such as MS Teams; and Cloud computing.
- Ability to transport, move, and manipulate various types of test gear and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to traverse slopes and declines.
- Ability to report in service to assigned duty station within 60 minutes of an after-hours call.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- Possession of an unrestricted Class A CDL with N endorsement to operate vehicles in Washington State.
- Three (3) years of experience in the automotive repair industry.
- Experience using equipment management systems, such as Fleet Equipment Management System (FEMS)
- Experience reading and understanding equipment manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings.
- Experience operating shop tools such as welders, drill presses, grinders, presses, hoists, air tools, and jacks.

- An additional 20% assignment pay is included in the posted salary.
- In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
