The Opportunity
The "M.V. Sanpoil" ferry can carry up to 20 cars and 149 passengers, providing a safe crossing service to the public. The ferry operates 18 hours a day, 365 days a year. We are looking for a safety minded individual provide customer service to the public, as well as assist with ferry operations.
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:
- Communicate professionally within your workgroup and with customers.
- Consider personal, co-worker, and public safety as first and foremost objective during the planning and performance of all activities.
- Assist with securing the vessel upon docking, casting off lines upon embarking safely and lowering of apron section of vessel slip to the level to permit embarking and debarkation of vehicles and passengers.
- Direct traffic into proper lanes using visual and verbal signals.
- Ensure vehicles are parked to properly balance the vessel.
- Assist in moving and aligning ramps.
- Inspect, service, and maintain ferry docks and ferry terminal landings and maintenance facilities.
- Assist in lubricating and servicing engines, running gear, and winches and assists in periodic inspections of engine room.
- Perform snow and debris removal from ferry and ramps.
- Maintain up to date knowledge of current State and Federal rules and regulations pertaining to ferry operation.
- Understand and perform fire extinguishing and lifesaving procedures and assists accordingly in the case of such emergency.
- Perform major and minor repairs and maintenance to ferry, ramps, buildings, and equipment associated with ferry operation.
- Maintain, clean, and stock rest area associated with Keller Ferry building; maintain grounds for Keller Ferry office building and rest area, mow, water, weed eat, pull weeds and other tasks associated with maintenance of grounds.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to safely move about while assisting in the preventive maintenance and repairs of the ferry and ferry landings.
- Willingness and ability to work long hours in an outdoor environment on the Keller Ferry car deck in a variety of weather conditions, including heat, cold, and inclement weather, and slippery conditions.
- Ability to move and transport objects weighing 50 lbs.
- Ability to obtain Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) prior to appointment.
- Ability to obtain a First Aid Card within six (6) months of hire.
- Valid driver's license.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- Great customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to take direction and work as a team.
- Experience working on boats.
- Maritime experience.
- Mechanical experience.
- Facilities maintenance experience.
