The Opportunity
This is an in-training opportunity that offers a career path, hands-on learning, and mentorship and allows you to progress upward through the Highway Maintenance Worker series and achieve the goal class of a Highway Maintenance Worker 2. This opportunity is perfect for someone who loves working with their hands, knowing their work is done on roadways and roadsides in a variety of weather. By taking on this role, you are serving a key and vital function to the State of Washington.
What to Expect
- Perform day-to-day striping maintenance operations such as but not limited to: spotting and marking and calling out highway "no passing" zones, channelization, intersections and highway striping using contract plans, "no pass" log, and existing highway striping.
- Drive a striping truck.
- Operate shoulder or centerline paint gun, using a computer-controlled skip timer console to select the proper paint lines and bead application.
- Drive the rear support truck and operate the attached variable message sign, arrow board and impact attenuator to control traffic at the rear of the striping train.
- Control traffic by operating the lead truck and variable message sign or act as early warning to traffic as a fourth warning vehicle in various striping train positions.
- Haul and load materials may require using boom/forklift.
- Work as part of a crew removing and installing new durable (plastic) roadway markings.
Qualifications
- One (1) year of experience performing highway maintenance, logging, farming, excavation, heavy equipment, or equivalent.
- A Washington State Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class B without airbrake restrictions. Must have N (tanker) endorsement and current medical card obtained prior to employment.
- Must obtain Washington State CDL Class A driver’s license with endorsement “N” and without air brakes restriction and no transmission within 12 months of employment.
To be considered for this opportunity at the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 level, the following are required:
- Current Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction and no transmission restrictions, and valid medical card.
- Two (2) years of experience performing highway maintenance, logging, farming, excavation, heavy equipment, or equivalent.
In addition, candidates at either level will have:
- Ability to respond to emergency call outs, work nights, work different and/or extended shifts on short notice (days, nights, and weekends), and perform standby duty.
- Ability to transport up to 50lbs with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions including confined spaces, uneven terrain, and next to fast high volume highway traffic.
- Ability to operate heavy equipment, and hand and power tools.
- Basic computer skills to communicate and retrieve information.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- Washington State Traffic Control/Flagging Card
- First Aid Certification
- Crane Certificate

Candidates will be considered for a Highway Maintenance Worker 1 or Highway Maintenance Worker 2, depending on their qualifications.
- Highway Maintenance Worker 1: $46,920 - $56,880
- Highway Maintenance Worker 2: $52,920 - $64,440
- In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28of the Washington Administrative Code.
