What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Maintenance Specialist 5 will:
- Oversee the maintenance and operations of the I-90 Floating Bridges and the Bridge maintenance facility on Mercer Island.
- Direct crews and prioritize work using Operations, Inspection and Maintenance Manuals.
- Perform routine and preventative work, including anchor cable adjustments, routine and post event bridge inspections, expansion joint repairs, proper function of the bridge alarm system, maintaining heat and smoke detection systems, monitoring water detection systems, weather station and fire pump.
- Work on navigation lighting, architectural lighting, cathodic protection, workboat moorage condition, readiness for wind events, and inspections for both bridge integrity and pontoon condition.
- Prepare and maintain written reports and monthly bridge reports.
- Keep employees and managers informed of emergencies and current issues.
- Coordinate with various teams for specialized tasks.
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols and standards.
- Manage inventory and procurement of necessary equipment and supplies.
Qualifications
- Valid Driver’s license
- Two (2) years’ experience in bridge maintenance
- Four (4) years of journey level experience in construction or a related trade such as Steel fabrication, Carpentry, Electrician, Concrete, Mechanic, Millwright etc.
- Four (4) years of experience in bridge maintenance.
In addition:
- Class A CDL, N tank endorsement, without restrictions E for no manual transmission and L for air brake restriction, or ability to get one within 6 months of employment.
- Availability to work nights, days, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Ability to follow directions and adhere to safety procedures.
- Capability to work in marine environment and in all types of weather including storms.
- Proficiency in working at heights over 100’ on catwalks, Under Bridge Inspection Truck (UBIT) or suspended staging.
- Ability to work in confined spaces.
- Physical ability to transport 50 lbs. with or without assistance.
- Ability to wear all required PPE’s including respirators.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- High school graduation or GED
- Four (4) years’ experience in bridge maintenance
- Proven experience leading and/or supervising crews, providing clear direction, and making sound decisions under stressful conditions.
- Strong knowledge and understanding of structural systems, including concrete, steel, and wood.
- Proficient in using computers, iPads, and Microsoft Office Products.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and prioritize workloads and manage multiple assignments.
- Experience reading and understanding bridge construction plans for troubleshooting purposes.

- This position is not eligible for remote work.
- The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County. An additional 10% assignment pay is included in the posted salary.
- In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
