Looking for an opportunity to get your foot in the door in state service while providing critical cleaning services for our resident Veterans? Look no further! Our team is excited to announce we are now accepting applications for a on-call Custodian 1 at the historic Washington Veterans Home in scenic Port Orchard, Washington!

  • This position has been posted within the assigned pay range through Step L. Step M has not been published as this is considered the longevity step, in alignment with state HR compensation rules.

Position(s) at this location will also receive 5% Premium Pay for facilities open twenty four hours per day. Employees must physically work at the facility 3 days per workweek to qualify. The 5% Premium Pay is in effect until June 29th, 2025.

In addition, we provide critical community services through a variety of programs, and at our four State Veterans Homes located in Orting, Port Orchard, Spokane, and Walla Walla. These locations provide Medicare and Medicaid nursing home care to Veterans, including, in some instances, their spouses, widows, or Gold Star families.

As a Custodian 1, you will perform a variety of custodial tasks and routine cleaning of our facility buildings. Your experience will be critical in enhancing the appearance of our facility while providing comfort to our residents.

Duties

Some of what you'll do:


  • Vacuum and extract carpets as required to maintain a bright, clean, spot-free, and odor-free condition.
  • Mop, disinfect, strip, and wax as required to maintain a uniform glossy appearance freey of scuff marks, stains, dirt, dust, and debris.
  • Sweep and mop stairwells.
  • Maintain baseboards free of dirt and wax build-up.
  • Empty trash and maintain receptacles free of odors.
  • Collect recycling.
  • Maintain clean walls, privacy curtains, shower curtains, beds, call light cords, and tray tables.
  • Perform various housekeeping, custodial, and maintenance-related tasks to ensure and maintain proper cleanliness of facility.
  • Clean floors throughout the facility.
  • Use brooms, buffers, carpet extractors, chemical dispensers, floor scrubbers, mops, mop buckets, personal protective equipment, vacuums, ladders, and other materials in the performance of custodial work.
  • Keep toilets, urinals, sinks, and other fixtures clean and free of scale, film, and odors.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Must:
    • Be able to work around unpleasant odors, bloodborne pathogens, body excrements, infections/contagious diseases while providing custodial services to elderly, vulnerable and/or disabled residents.
    • Have excellent listening skills and be able to work productively with staff and residents from diverse backgrounds.
    • Be able to follow policies and procedures.
    • Be able to read and understand written instructions, directions, and procedures in English.
    • Be able to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
    • Possess the physical ability to do required work, as there is heavy lifting of up to 50 lbs., as well as regular stooping, kneeling, and bending.
    • Possess basic computer literacy skills in order to complete required trainings.

Preferred/Desired:
  • Two (2) years of full-time experience in a large-scale housekeeping, janitorial, building maintenance, or custodial work in a healthcare facility, hospital, or nursing home.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Methods, materials, and equipment used in cleaning and caring for floors, walls, fixtures, and furniture.
    • Safety practices and procedures for handling chemicals.
    • Aseptic procedures and infection control as related to custodial services.
  • Ability to:
    • Adopt work procedures to meet changing needs.
    • Inspect and evaluate custodial work for cleanliness, aseptic cleanliness, and neatness.
    • Make simple arithmetic calculations.
    • Interact effectively with others.
    • Follow safety policies, procedures, and practices.
    • Operate floor care machines.

Special Requirements:
  • Must be able to pass a DSHS BCCU Background Check prior to beginning services and every two (2) years in accordance with WDVA Policy 615.000 Background Checks. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position.
  • Must comply with annual Tuberculin Screening in accordance with DVA policy 670.000 Tuberculosis Testing.
  • Requires medical evaluation, fit testing, training, and use of respiratory protection as required by the Washington Industrial Safety and Act standards. Must be able to wear a respirator, medical gloves, gowns, eye protection, and other personal protection as required by a job or task.
  • Must maintain regular and reliable attendance, proper call-in, call-out, and be willing to work as needed.
  • Must successfully complete, within mandated timeframes, employee orientation, and all other mandatory annual, in-service, and other required training and meetings.
  • Must become familiar and comply with DVA policies and procedures and Collective Bargaining Agreements as applicable.
  • Must sign the confidentiality statement for all employees.
  • Candidates who are offered a job with WDVA must possess work authorization which does not require sponsorship by the employer for a visa now or in the future.
