The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking a Bridge Electrical and Electronic Systems Specialist 3 in Medina, WA. Medina, WA, is located in the Eastside Region of King County. As a senior technical specialist, this position supports WSDOT’s mission by applying advanced technical knowledge to perform inspections on new transportation and highway construction or devise methods and processes to resolve the most complex issues in the maintenance, installation, and repair of systems proficient in electrical and fire life safety systems. This position will primarily lead and direct the diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of these systems on the 520 Floating Bridge. This position is critical in fostering a respectful and healthy work environment with a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion.  


What to Expect 

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the EESS 3 will:

  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical and electronic systems on the SR 520 Floating Bridge.  
  • Utilize specialized test equipment, including volt-ohm meters, ammeters, meggers, and time-domain reflectometers.  
  • Ensure NEC compliance, perform load calculations, and update electrical prints.  
  • Research, plan, and purchase necessary equipment for electrical work.  
  • Perform work safely with minimal supervision and oversee others on-site.  
  • Operate, maintain, and repair PLC control systems, HMI panels, and multiplexed alarm systems.  
  • Maintain fire suppression systems, weather stations, and diesel refueling systems.  
  • Conduct work on medium voltage distribution systems up to 15kV, including transformers and switch gear components.  
  • Perform work on distribution and branch circuits, including generators, UPS systems, and lighting controls.  
  • Work in challenging environments, including confined spaces, heights, marine settings, and adverse weather conditions. 

 

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Five (5) years (approximately 10,000 hours) of relevant professional experience performing technical electrical, fire system, and/or electronic work.

OR

  • Possession of a valid Washington State journey or master-level electrical license (EL01, EL06, EL07, or ME01) may substitute for some education or experience.

OR 

  • Completion of equivalent, relevant professional formal training through an electrical apprenticeship program, or accredited electrical or electronics training program, or vocational or technical school, military-based electrical/electronics training; agency-specific in-training plan.

OR

  • A bachelor's degree in electrical or electronics technology and two (2) years of relevant professional experience performing technical electrical, fire system, and/or electronic work.

 

In addition to:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Ability to perform Basic algebraic equations.
  • Ability to see and differentiate colors to perform electrical and electronic maintenance and repair work.
  • Ability to transport and manipulate up to 50 lbs. of equipment and move about unrestrictedly while ascending stairs/ladders/inclines and uneven surfaces.
  • Ability to work at heights exceeding 100 feet in/around/over live traffic and 60 feet above water on bridges.
  • Must be available for standby duties on a rotational basis and report to the duty station within one hour. Work may be required during nights, days, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and use a 700 MHz radio network.
  • Ability to input information on a computer, generating work reports.
  • Knowledge of how to operate basic testing equipment for electrical systems.
  • Class B CDL, N Tank endorsement, without restrictions E for no manual transmission and L for airbrake restriction, or ability to obtain this within 6 months of employment. 

 

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Journey Level Electrician (EL01, EL02, EL04, or EL07)
  • Electronics Certification by Washington State CET or International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians (ISCET)
  • A certification for computers and electronics
  • Washington State Flagging Card

  • The salary listed includes the legislative-approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.
  • This position is not eligible for remote work.

  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
