This recruitment is open on an internal basis to permanent state employees of the Washington Military Department.
This position reports to the Maintenance Specialist 4 located at Fairchild Air Force Base and is responsible for performing and directing general grounds care and custodial efforts.
Responsibilities include:
- Landscape maintenance and development.
- Plans, formulates, stores, schedules, and applies various approved chemicals such as pesticides and herbicides involved in grounds care.
- Directs and leads maintenance custodians assigned to the East Air Maintenance Division.
- Oversee and performs minor maintenance and routine cleanliness of assigned buildings and work areas.
- Under general guidance may be required to complete or assist higher level staff in the completion of non-routine maintenance activities and/or special assignments.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Three years of paid experience in grounds maintenance, gardening, plant care, cultivation, and/or landscape installation, AND
- One year of lead and/or supervisory experience.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Working Knowledge:
- Landscaping functions (mowing, irrigation, grounds maintenance, etc.).
- Cleaning methods - chemicals, equipment, and supplies used in general custodial work.
- Operate and maintain electric and gas-powered lawn equipment to mow lawns, clear brush, limbs and trees.
- Operate and drive light truck to transport supplies and equipment, haul refuse and garbage.
- Ice and tree removal.
- Operate truck and equipment mounted spray tanks.
- Operate custodial equipment.
Compensation: Wage/salary depends on qualifications or rules of promotion.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Background Investigation: Must successfully complete the appropriate background checks required for employment and obtain/maintain a Department of Defense DoD Common Access Card (CAC). Must be willing to sign releases of information and shall not have access to any investigative materials and files. The processing of background checks can take up to six months post-employment. Failure to successfully pass a background check may be cause for termination.

Driver's License:
- Valid to drive in the State of Washington.
- Must meet requirements of the REAL ID Act. This is required for base access and will be required upon hire.
Military Facility: Willingness to work on a Military Controlled Access Installation. Camp Murray and Fairchild AFB utilize the Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS) for entry to the installation. Must meet access requirements / background check which can be found in the Camp Murray Access Requirements Policy (Unified Policy No. 18-01). This includes possession of an Enhanced Driver’s License, or other REAL ID Compliant Identification.
Work Hours: Monday through Thursday (4/10 schedule) 6:00am - 4:30pm.
Telework: This position is not eligible for telework.
Emergency Assignment: Upon activation of the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) or Joint Field Office (JFO), incumbent may be required to work in an alternate location with rotating shifts, including weekends and evenings, in a highly stressful and fast-paced environment.
Travel: Occasional statewide travel may be required.
