The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking to fill a Seasonal Highway Maintenance Worker 2 to provide crucial traffic control and highway maintenance support for the Northwest Region Pavement Marking crews and the Area 51 Sign crew. In alignment with WSDOT's mission, these roles contribute to ensuring the safe and efficient movement of goods, services, and people throughout the region. What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Seasonal Highway Maintenance Worker 2 will:

  • Perform traffic control for Northwest Region Striping, Thermoplastic, Raised Pavement Markings, and Area 51 Sign crews.
  • Operate pickups, Traffic Mounted Attenuators (TMA's) with Variable Message Systems (VMS), and arrow boards for advanced warning in mobile traffic control operations.
  • Respond to work requests from internal and external customers.
  • Fill in as a white side gunner on the Striping truck as needed.
  • Provide routine maintenance of highway signage and pavement markings.
  • Work with higher-level maintenance workers for the installation and removal of crosswalks, stop bars, arrows, and various other markings.
  • Fill in as a Raised Pavement Marking (RPM) setter on the RPM truck as needed.
  • Assist in assembling signs using a variety of equipment and tools such as drills and rivet guns.
  • Clear brush for sign visibility using weed eaters and loggers.
  • Track and document daily work activities within the Highway Activity Tracking System (HATS), documentation logs, and Excel for supervisory or management review.


Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • High school graduation or GED. 
  • Two (2) years of highway maintenance, logging, farming, excavation, or heavy equipment experience.

OR
 

  • One (1) year of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 1 or equivalent.

 
 In addition to the following:

  • Valid Washington State CDL Class A driver's license with endorsement "N" and without air brake restriction, with a valid medical card. 
  • Must obtain a Washington State Traffic Control/Flagging Card and maintain the card throughout employment.
  • Ability to work outdoors for long hours in various weather conditions while managing live traffic. You will encounter uneven terrain and slopes and may need to perform duties at ground level. Additionally, you may be exposed to chemicals, waste, and hazardous materials. Live traffic control will be performed either from a stationary position or from a moving platform.
  • Ability to manipulate 50 lbs. in a safe manner.
  • It may require the ability to work nights, days, weekends, and extended hours. 
  • Frequent extended out-of-town travel may be required for this position.

 
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have the following:

  • Washington State Traffic Control/Flagging Card. 
  • Crane Certificate

  • This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.
  • This position is not eligible for remote work.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28of the Washington Administrative Code. 
  • The salary listed includes the legislatively approved 10% Group C premium for HMW2 positions located in Seattle, WA. 
  • The salary listed includes the legislative-approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.
  • This seasonal work opportunity is expected to last from April through October.  
  • This position is subject to the drug and alcohol testing requirements of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA). For more information, please go to DOT Drug & Alcohol Testing.
