The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking two Highway Maintenance Worker 3’s to lead and perform skilled maintenance tasks on highways and structures in both Auburn and Kent, WA. This role will operate a variety of highway equipment and tools while guiding entry and journey-level staff. The position ensures the safe and efficient movement of people and goods, occasionally supervising crews in the absence of the Highway Maintenance Supervisor. This role is essential to maintaining a respectful, inclusive, professional work environment.
 
What to Expect

The duties involve physical work outdoors in various weather conditions and may include traffic control, manual labor, operating machinery, and working at elevated heights. Work may also include traversing rough, steep, and uneven terrain.

There may be exposure to hazardous conditions, materials, and chemicals, as well as waste products.


The position's schedules vary during the work week, with 40 hours per week on 10-hour shifts. Weekend and holiday work may be required for non-scheduled or call-out emergencies. The employee must report to duty within 60 minutes of an after-hours call. Alternate and emergency shifts may be assigned. Standby and call-back may be required.


Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 3 will:

  • Lead highway maintenance crews in daily tasks on state highways.
  • Prioritize, plan, schedule, and budget maintenance activities under supervision.
  • Coordinate equipment and personnel with fellow Highway Maintenance Worker 3s.
  • Maintain and submit daily records of maintenance activities, including time, equipment, and fuel reports.
  • Enter and review maintenance activities in computerized systems to ensure accuracy.
  • Train personnel in equipment usage, safety protocols, and public relations.
  • Arrange to purchase repair parts and rent privately owned equipment.
  • Investigate personal injuries and equipment damage and assist in accident reporting.
  • Operate Class A, B, and C highway equipment for maintenance tasks.
  • Lead and perform snow and ice control, emergency responses, and traffic control.


Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • One (1) year of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 or Maintenance Specialist 3 OR two (2) years of experience as a Maintenance Technician 2, Bridge Maintenance Technician 2, or Maintenance Specialist 2 or equivalent combination of experience. 
  • Possess a valid Traffic Control/Flagging card with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD, including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging; or obtain Flagger Certification within six (6) months.
  • Possess an unrestricted Class A CDL with N endorsement. 
  • Experience in communicating to multiple audiences, both orally and in writing. 
  • Experience providing outstanding customer service. 
  • Experience working independently and prioritizing workload, with the ability to handle multiple assignments.
  • Experience using computers, iPads, and Microsoft Office Products.
  • Ability to operate Class A, B, and C equipment w/current technology in highway maintenance operations.
  • Ability to manipulate 50 pounds or more. 


It is preferred that qualified candidates also have the following:

  • High school graduation or possession of a GED certificate or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of experience in one of the following job classes: Highway Maintenance Worker 2, Bridge Maintenance Technician 2, or Maintenance Specialist 2. 
  • One (1) year of experience operating and transporting equipment. 
  • Experience operating vehicles weighing 26,000 GVW. 
  • Experience leading and/or supervising crews, providing clear direction, and making good decisions in stressful conditions. 
  • Knowledge of the surrounding area. 
  • Understanding of TEF-owned equipment. 
  • Plans Reading Certification
  • Washington State Pesticide Applicator’s License
  • Backflow Prevention Tester Certification
  • Crane Certificate
  • Washington State Traffic Control/Flagging Card


Important Notes 

  • This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs. 
  • The salary listed includes the legislative-approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County and 10% Group C Assignment Pay. 
  • This position is not eligible for remote work.
  • Must obtain Class A CDL with endorsement “N” and without air brakes restriction and no transmission restrictions within 12 months of employment. Must maintain throughout employment.

  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
