The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our Northeast Region. We are seeking a Regulation and Prevention Technician (Wildland Fire Management Supervisor) for our North Columbia fire unit in Colville, WA.

The Regulation and Prevention Technician is responsible for wildfire suppression, prevention, and regulation throughout the region including state trust lands. On average, the North Columbia unit conducts suppression actions for 120 fire starts annually, processes approximately 75 burn permit requests annually, and provides training courses to local cooperators. Interagency cooperation occurs in most wildland fires and most fire training courses  Interagency cooperation includes working with local fire districts, and state and federal partners and is a key function of this position.Responsibilities:
The Regulation and Preventions Technician has a great influence on the quality, image, and message delivered to the general public of Washington State. This position works closely with community partners and other agencies and plays a leadership role in fire suppression activities.  

The majority of the duties will include administering and approving burn permits, interpreting/applying fire regulations and IFPL restrictions, conducting wildland fire investigations, and fire suppression. This position will act as a Wildland Fire Investigator regularly. The Regulation and Prevention Technician will work closely with fire suppression resources to suppress and prevent the spread of wildland fire.  

Other duties will include but are not limited to being a lead and/or unit instructor for NWCG fire courses for wildland fire training, leading, and participating in wildland fire prevention activities. The Northeast Region is a fast-paced and complex work environment that requires an individual who will work within the team's goals and dynamics to be successful.Required Qualifications: 
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Experience with:
    • Firefighting techniques, practices, terminology, equipment, and other resources for wildland fire management including support needs, communications, and safety precautions.
    • Wildland Fire regulatory practices and burn permit processes.
    • Fire weather technology, weather’s effect on various fuel types, and knowledge of weather as it influences fire behavior.
    • Professionally communicating with a variety of groups including subordinates, superiors, the public, and other partner organizations both written and verbal, especially in stressful situations.
    • Developing and maintaining cooperative, effective working relationships both internally and externally.
  • NWCG Qualified as:
    • Single Resource Boss
    • Incident Commander Type 5
  • Experience in computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and GPS technology.
  • Must annually pass arduous level work capacity test.
  • General knowledge of conducting Wildland Fire Origin and Cause Determination investigations.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
  • This position has a mix of office (40%) and fieldwork (60%) responsibilities. The fire suppression work is strenuous outdoor work in all weather conditions. Must be able to traverse uneven and mountainous terrain.
  • This position will be assigned an agency vehicle. The position requires significant driving and field visits within a geographically assigned area.
  • A valid unrestricted driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years. 
Desired Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Forestry, or other related field or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • NWCG Qualifications:
    • 2 NWCG Single Resource Boss qualifications (1 must either be Engine Boss or Crew Boss)
    • NWCG Incident Commander Type 4
    • NWCG Wildland Fire Investigator
  • Completed FEMA ICS courses I-100, I-200, IS-700, IS-800.
  • Skilled in supervision, leadership, and management of people.
