DNR encourages and supports the continuing professional development of our Land Survey staff. This is a great opportunity for a surveyor wanting to work in non-urban areas primarily on the scenic Olympic Peninsula with a small, but highly skilled work group.As part of the Olympic Region Survey Crew, the successful candidate for this position will be the lead person of a two-to-three-person land survey field crew. This position works out of the DNR’s Port Angeles Work Center to support Timber Sale Operations in the Olympic Region. It will also perform boundary and topographic surveys for other programs in the agency as needed. We utilize robotic total stations, modern multi-constellation GNSS receivers, and up-to-date office software to perform Cadastral, GLO / PLSS retracements, boundary staking, and topographic surveys on state-managed forest lands, natural areas, and recreation sites. Responsibilities : In the field : Navigating to and from remote job sites in large 4x4 vehicles and utilizing ATVs.Selecting routes and planning survey operations; operating or supervising the operation of field survey equipment including robotic and semi-robotic total stations and GNSS receivers.Mapping topographic features, property lines, rights of ways, utilities, site surveys, and boundary location.Plan and execute GNSS control surveys necessary for coordinating land surveys.Conducting survey control traverses in heavily forested and mountainous terrain that meet the State WAC and RCW requirements.Be proficient in GLO corner recovery and land boundary surveying principles.In the office : Reducing field notes and verifying data collection files.Research survey and title records and organization of survey project job files.Performing calculations and preliminary map drafting using a computer.Assist the licensed land surveyor in charge of checking the final survey map.Maintain or supervise the maintenance of the field survey equipment, training field crew members in the operation of equipment.Compose legal descriptions and land corner notes for inclusion on a record of survey.Required Qualifications : Four years of experience performing land survey work and an associate degree or higher in forestry, engineering, or related fieldOR an equivalent combination of education and / or experience.Experience with surveying equipment such as electronic total stations, electronic data collectors and software, GNSS equipment, and data collectors.Experience with complex coordinate geometry (COGO) computations.Knowledge of or experience with surveying on the Washington State Plane Grid System.Knowledge of basic statutes and other laws pertaining to the establishment, locating, dividing, and defining of corners, monuments, lines, and boundaries of land.Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.Ability to use standard office computer applications such as email, word processors, and spreadsheets as well as AutoCAD Carlson survey software and StarNet survey network adjustment software.Skills with cross-county navigation, using a topographic map and compass to navigate, and map and aerial photo interpretation skills are all regularly required of incumbents holding this position.Ability to operate All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs).Ability to operate crew transport vehicles in an off-road environment.Commitment to fostering and supporting an environment that honors diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental justice practices.Perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and public records retention and requests are followed.DNR Core Competencies : Personal AccountabilityValue OthersCompassionate CommunicationInspire OthersCommitment to ExcellenceSpecial Requirements and Conditions of Employment : This is largely a field position. The position requires the ability to be physically capable of walking long distances while carrying up to 40 pounds of equipment over mountainous, forested terrain in inclement weather conditions.Typically, projects are located within a 1 to 2.5-hour drive from the office, but overnight travel may be necessary for projects that are located in remote areas of the Olympic Region, or for projects that have been assigned but are located in other DNR regions.A valid unrestricted driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function.
