About the Position: 
Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officers (CVEOs) are trained and certified commercial motor vehicle subject matter experts that strive to make Washington roadways the safest in the nation.  CVEOs are responsible for promoting the safe travel of commercial vehicles on state highways through education and enforcement, along with enhancing safe transportation of school children and protecting the state’s infrastructure.

The Motor Carrier Safety Division works alongside the Commercial Vehicle Division in promoting the safe travel of commercial vehicles on state highways through education and enforcement.

About the Agency:
The Washington State Patrol  is a nationally accredited law enforcement agency made up of dedicated professionals who work hard to improve the quality of life of our citizens and prevent the unnecessary loss of life on a daily basis.

CVEOs enforce laws and regulations pertaining to weight, size, and equipment safety, the transportation of hazardous materials, driver/vehicle licensing and permit requirements by performing Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) driver/vehicle inspections on commercial motor vehicles. CVEOs also have pivotal roles in assisting with investigations of major accidents and fatalities involving commercial vehicles, assisting the Fuel Tax Evasion Task Force, assisting the Drug Interdiction Assistance Program (DIAP), identifying stolen heavy equipment, and Truckers Against Trafficking Programs.
 
 You will be responsible for:
  • Inspection of commercial vehicle drivers for conformity to licensing, log book, and permit requirements as determined by state and federal laws, rules and requirements
  • Physical inspection of the commercial vehicle and load for conformity to size, weight, and load restrictions as well as safety and mechanical requirements as determined by state and federal laws, rules and requirements
  • Preparing cases and submitting daily inspection reports to properly document violations and findings in support of legal action in district, superior, and civil courts
  • Operating radio, computer, weighing systems, and motor vehicles. May be required to operate radiological monitoring devices on radioactive loads as required by state and federal laws

Required Experience & Education:
  • Must be 21 years old at the time of application
  • Possess a High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Be a United States Citizen or a Lawful Permanent Resident of the United States of America
  • Possess a valid non-probationary, unrestricted Washington State Drivers driver's license at the time of employment and maintain such licensure during employment with the WSP.  
    • History of restrictions on license or driving record due to vehicle operation or control will be considered on a case-by-case basis

Special requirements: 
  • Must successfully pass the CVEO Basic Course at the Academy, and post Academy field training
  • Must successfully pass firearms, defensive tactics, and first aide training qualification
  • Employee must live within the State of Washington
  • Must be willing to work week-ends, holidays, and rotating shifts
  • Must be willing to work in all weather conditions
  • Be free from color blindness and night blindness
  • Must be willing to report to work with little advance notice
  • Must be physically able to crawl under or climb around/over commercial vehicles in order to inspect for compliance with state safety, proper condition, weight, height, length, width, and other configuration laws
  • Must be physically capable of lifting and deploying portable scales (up to 50 lbs) in order to weigh commercial vehicles
  • Willing to work in an environment that has potential for exposure to hazardous and/or radioactive material

Residency Requirement:
Because of the nature of the duties and the possibility of emergency call-out, and who are not assigned a state vehicle, will be allowed to live seventy-five (75) miles from their assigned duty station. The five Ports of Entry (POEs) are located in Bow, Cle Elum, Kennewick, Ridgefield, and Spokane.
 
More information: 
The applicants selected for hire will be required to complete a phased training program designed to ensure the employee is trained on both the requirements for Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), inspection of commercial motor vehicles, as well as those aspects necessary for officer safety.
 
The CVEO 1 will be required to successfully complete the training and testing. The CVSA training is a federal mandated training program. Candidates who fail this training may be granted one retest, and failure of the retest is grounds for termination.
 
Phase One of the training will consist of on-the-job-training at the candidate's eventual work site. During this training the employee will work under the direct supervision of CVEO's to develop a basic understanding of the process of inspecting Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMV).
 
Phase Two of training will consist of attendance at CVEO 1 Basic Training. This fourteen (14) week training program is designed to train the employee on those job skills necessary to perform the duties of a CVEO 1. This training is held at the WSP Academy in Shelton.  This includes first aide, firearms training, defensive tactics, as well as training in CVSA inspection procedures. At the successful completion of Phase one and Phase two of the training, employees will graduate and return to the work site.
 
Phase Three of the training will consist of:
  1. Supervised inspections at the assigned work site. Upon completion of 32 supervised CMV inspections, the employee will be certified as a CVEO 1
  2. Training with a Field Training Officer for a minimum of ten (10) weeks
This recruitment will be used to fill multiple vacancies. 

WSP Policy 1.04.020 - WSP does not engage in, or assist with, civil immigration enforcement, therefore; In no stage of the hiring process will the immigration status of family members of the candidate be investigated by the Washington State Patrol.
