Are you experienced in handling inventory, procurement, and receiving stock and looking for an opportunity to support a greater mission? Join our team as a Procurement and Supply Specialist 1 for the Dietary Services Department at the Washington Veterans Home in scenic Port Orchard, Washington!

Please note : The expected shift for this position is 4 : 30 a.m. to 1 : 00 p.m., Monday through Friday at the Washington Veterans Home.

  • This position has been posted within the assigned pay range through Step L. Step M has not been published as this is considered the longevity step, in alignment with state HR compensation rules.

Position(s) at this location will also receive 5% Premium Pay for facilities open twenty-four hours per day. Employees must physically work at the facility 3 days per workweek to qualify. The 5% Premium Pay is in effect until June 29th, 2025.

In addition, we provide critical community services through a variety of programs, and at our four State Veterans Homes located in Orting, Port Orchard, Spokane, and Walla Walla. These locations provide Medicare and Medicaid nursing home care to Veterans, including, in some instances, their spouses, widows, or Gold Star Families.

As a Procurement and Supply Specialist 1 , you will provide all procurement and supply needs to the Dietary Services Department of the Washington Veterans Home while interacting closely with staff, residents, families, and the general public to perform your duties. Your role is crucial to ensuring seamless supply management functions, including receipt, storage, and transfer of materials and property.

  • Frequently lift, push, pull, stoop, bend, and handle materials and products weighing up to 60 lbs., and occasionally up to 80 lbs.
  • Manage and process all orders for perishable and non-perishable food items.
  • Maintain responsibility for all ordering and inventory for the dietary services department.
  • Maintain storage areas in clean and neat order.
  • Review and prioritize requests in accordance with approved menu and regulatory guidelines.
  • Freezer activities :
  • Receive and process all frozen food orders.

  • Rotate freezer stock to assure oldest stock used first.
  • Monitor and replenish special food items and pull frozen items for menu and thaw appropriately.
  • Ensure food items are being used in an appropriate time frame.
  • Dry storage and fresh produce / dairy activities :
  • Receive, process, and stock food.

  • Store product on shelving in an orderly manner.
  • Deliveries / receiving activities :
  • Contact vendors to discuss the disposition of damaged goods received or any questions on billing.

  • Maintain all departmental inventory records.
  • Process appropriate ordering and receiving documentation with invoices for review by supervisory staff.
  • Documentation and regulatory monitoring activities :
  • Perform ongoing contract and contractor evaluations to ensure goods and services are delivered and in accordance with contract requirements and prices remain competitive with general market.

  • Required :

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Experience in handling inventory, procurement, and receiving stock in a food service setting.
  • Valid Washington state food handler's permit.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, peripheral vision, and color vision.
  • Ability to :
  • Lift / carry / push / pull frequently up to 60 lbs. and occasionally up to 80 lbs.

  • Push wheelchairs and walk distances to provide tours of the facility.
  • Push carts to assist with setup of catered event / special events.
  • Speak, read, write, and understand directions, instructions, and procedures in English.
  • Make simple arithmetic calculations.
  • Work productively with staff and residents from diverse backgrounds.
  • Follow policies and procedures and maintain quality, safety, and / or infection control standards.
  • Demonstrate a mastery of core reception functions (e.g., phone courtesy, multitasking, attention to detail, and customer-driven).
  • Preferred / Desired :

  • ServSafe certified.
  • Twelve (12) months of experience working with geriatric population and / or healthcare institutional setting.
  • Twelve (12) months of experience working with residents with dementia / Alzheimer's diagnosis.
  • Experience with
  • Veteran population.

  • Project planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Ability to :
  • Organize, prioritize multiple projects, and meet deadlines in a time-sensitive environment.

  • Comply with DSHS and VA guidelines with regard to nutrition and food service inventory and storage.
  • Demonstrated skills and strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office including Excel, Outlook, and Word.
  • Knowledge of therapeutic diet planning, preparation and serving of special diets; sanitary methods of food handling.

  • Special Requirements :
  • Must be able to pass a DSHS BCCU Background Check prior to beginning services and every two (2) years in accordance with WDVA Policy 615.000 Background Checks. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position.
  • Must comply with annual Tuberculin Screening in accordance with DVA policy 670.000 Tuberculosis Testing.
  • Requires medical evaluation, fit testing, training, and use of respiratory protection as required by the Washington Industrial Safety and Act standards. Must be able to wear a respirator, medical gloves, gowns, eye protection, and other personal protection as required by a job or task.
  • Must be able to lift up to 60 lbs. (and sometimes up to 80 lbs.) and be capable of reaching up to 74" using proper technique to stock shelves and access supplies. Employee must also be able to push or pull with sufficient strength and walk, sit, and bend in an unrestricted manner during the entire workday.
  • Must maintain a valid Washington State Food Handler's Permit.
  • Must learn all current modified / therapeutic diets.
  • Must sign the confidentiality statement for all employees.
  • Become familiar and comply with all DVA policies and procedures and Collective Bargaining Agreements as applicable.
  • Must maintain regular and reliable attendance and follow proper call-in procedures.
  • Must successfully complete, within mandated time frame, employee orientation and all other mandatory annual, in-service, and other required training.
  • Positions requiring travel must have a valid unrestricted driver's license and must be insured if driving a privately owned vehicle on state business.
