The State of Wisconsin, Department of Military Affairs (DMA) is hiring a Program Instructor (Staff Development Program Specialist). This position is located at STARBASE Wisconsin, which is at the US Army Recruiting Station on Silver Spring Drive, Milwaukee, WI.

The STARBASE Wisconsin Training Program is an educational outreach program for 5th grade students designed to inspire and increase the knowledge, interests and skills of at-risk and underrepresented youth. The program areas covered in the instruction are Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). The curriculum is inquiry-based with "hands-on", experiential activities in a high-tech, fast paced environment. Some of the exciting activities include : model rocketry, robotics, building molecular models, electrical circuits, engineering design, computer aided design, and STEM career exploration.

This position works 40 hours per week with a work schedule of either 7 : 30 am to 4 : 00 pm or 8 : 00 am to 4 : 30 pm.

Position Summary

This position, under the general supervision of the STARBASE Director, administers the DoD STARBASE Wisconsin Training Program. The primary purpose of this position is to provide hands-on training using a combination of practical knowledge of the methods, techniques of instruction, and practical knowledge of the subject matter being taught, especially in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). STARBASE's primary focus is the program for fifth graders. The program encourages students to set goals and achieve them. The goal is to motivate them to explore STEM opportunities as they continue their education. This position is responsible for developing, promoting, providing training and evaluating STARBASE Wisconsin's program

Individuals that are able to read, write, and speak fluently in Spanish and English are encouraged to apply. If the selected candidate is bilingual in English and Spanish (verification will be required) at the time of hire, they would qualify for bilingual add-on pay.

Salary Information

Starting pay is between $28.95 and $32.47 per hour.

This position is in the 81 / 04 pay schedule / range. Pay on appointment for current state employees may vary according to the applicable pay transaction provisions of the Compensations Plan, Wisconsin Administrative Code, and statutes. A 12-month probation will be required.

Those individuals eligible for the bilingual add-on pay by being fluent in both Spanish and English will get an additional $1.00 / hr add on. If you are bilingual in Spanish and English, be sure to click the "Add Language Skills" button in the Qualifications>

Job Details

In order to gain access to the military facilities and to determine whether the circumstances of any conviction may be related to the job being filled, DMA will conduct a comprehensive background check which includes an FBI fingerprint- based background check.

All new permanent, project, and limited term employees will be required to report to JFHQ in Madison on the Monday of their first week of employment for the New Employee Orientation (NEO) program. Additional information will be sent to the new employees and their supervisors on the Tuesday prior to NEO.

Qualifications

Minimum requirements :

  • A bachelor's degree in a STEM field (science, technology, engineering or math) or in education. This is in accordance with the requirements of the Department of Defense as outlined in DoD Instruction 1025.07 .
  • In addition to the minimum qualifications, well-qualified candidates will also have the following preferred qualifications :

  • Developing and implementing a training program.
  • Experience working with youth.
  • Experience teaching STEM.
