Position Summary

The Animal Care Specialist supports the mission of the Wisconsin Historical Society and goals of Old World Wisconsin by assisting with humane animal care and the use of animals as part of educational programming at Old World Wisconsin as key components of the guest experience.

Reporting to the Site Director and Animal Programs Coordinator, the Animal Care Specialist assists with the daily care and management of horses, cattle, sheep, goats, swine, and chickens following, but not limited to, USDA guidelines, input from regular veterinary assessments, established WHS standards, and heritage breed conservation goals. Responsibilities include daily animal husbandry, providing enrichment and training opportunities for the animals and documenting activities associated with feeding, veterinary care, enrichment, and general welfare. The Animal Care Specialist collaborates with the Animal Programs Coordinator and others to incorporate animals into the daily guest experience through Animal Encounters and living history programs and presents information about the animals through public programs. The position helps maintain Old World Wisconsin's modern animal care facility and all supplies and equipment used for animal care. The Animal Care Specialist works collaboratively with others to achieve program goals and provide the best possible experience for Old World Wisconsin guests and Old World Wisconsin animals.

Salary Information

Starting hourly wage is $19.95 per hour, depending on qualifications, plus excellent benefits. This position is in pay schedule and range 03-11, and the classification is Historic Farmer. A 12-month probationary period will be required..

Job Details

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :

  • Ability to legally operate a state-owned motor vehicle in the State of Wisconsin
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds, push, pull, bend, stoop, kneel, climb, carry, shovel, rake, scoop, sit, stand, and sweep
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule which may include evenings and / or weekends and holidays

Qualifications

Minimally qualified candidates will have experience in all of the following :

  • Experience with hands-on animal care of the species included at OWW (horses, cattle, sheep, swine, chickens, rabbits...).
  • Experience performing daily tasks : feeding, animal enclosure cleaning, administration of medications.
  • Experience with use of hand tools, cleaning supplies, and providing care for animals with minimal supervision.
  • In addition to minimum qualifications, a well-qualified candidate will additionally have experience in one of the following areas :

  • Hands-on experience with animal care of the species included at OWW (horses, cattle, sheep, swine, chickens, rabbits...) within a setting such as OWW (historic living museum, zoo..).
  • Demonstrated understanding of daily care of animals throughout the year, including feeding, health assessments & care, training, cleaning and maintenance of animal habitats.
  • Demonstrated experience working within an animal care team & ability to take directions from an Animal Care Coordinator.
  • Experience interacting with and coordinating animal activities with education / guest services staff within a setting similar to OWW.
  • Experience serving as an animal care lead during periods when Animal Care Manager is not on site.
