Position Summary

Reporting to the Digital Production Manager, the Microfilm Digitization Assistant preps microfilm for scanning; operates a high-volume microfilm scanner; uses post-scanning software to assemble proprietary scanned files into individual images as they appear on the microfilm; performs optical character recognition (OCR) on scanned images; and writes files to network storage.

This position is part of the Digital Services team but collaborates with multiple cross-functional teams that engage with microfilm at the Wisconsin Historical Society.

Duties :

  • Microfilm digitization

Prep microfilm for scanning.

  • Calibrate scanner according to technical information provided with film.
  • Load and unload microfilm.
  • Scan microfilm according to established standards and workflows.
  • Image QC & post-processing
  • Using post-scanning software, split the scanned files into individual frames as they appear on the microfilm.

  • Crop, rotate and adjust skew, as necessary.
  • Adjust brightness, gamma, and contrast, as necessary.
  • Select appropriate output file format.
  • Apply additional adjustments as necessary to meet end-user requirements.
  • Use ABBYY Fine Reader to identify text, adjust bounding boxes as necessary, and output files to PDF.
  • Please note : Grant funding for this position ends on June 30, 2025.

    Salary Information

    Pay is $15.00 per hour. This classification is in schedule and class 02-09.

    Please note this is a Limited Term Employment position so it does not include paid time off or benefits upon hire.

    Job Details

    A criminal background check will be conducted by WHS prior to an offer of employment to determine if the circumstances of any conviction may be related to the job.

    This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position and limited to 1,039 hours. This position will be part time and average 20 hours per week.

    Wisconsin residency is required for Limited Term Employment positions.

    Limited Term Employment (LTE) positions are not civil service classified positions, do not give any rights to permanent civil service classified positions and do not lead to permanent status.

    WHS does not sponsor work visas. Any appointment made will be contingent on the applicant being able to prove valid status to work in the United States.

    Qualifications

  • Basic knowledge of photography principles and equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of film scanning and digital image manipulation.
  • Basic knowledge of spreadsheets and project management software.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to do minor maintenance on equipment.
  • Ability to operate under limited supervision.
  • Ability to facilitate a positive attitude toward working safely.
  • Ability to keep accurate production records.
