What are the responsibilities and job description for the Admissions Advisor position at State University of New York, Cortland?

The Admissions Advisor will help carry out a full range of first-year and transfer admissions activities. Primary responsibilities include participation in recruitment-related travel and online events, application review, and presentations geared to prospective students and their families. The position will require extensive travel and occasional evening and weekend work.

Major Responsibilities
Admissions Application Review
  • Evaluate and make decisions on first-year and transfer student applications for admission
  • Collaborate with committee members to ensure fair and consistent evaluation standards
  • Respond to and reach out to prospective students via phone, email and other communication platforms

Participate in Recruitment Travel
  • Represent SUNY Cortland at recruitment events, such as college fairs, school visits, and community events
  • Engage with prospective students, parents, educators, and stakeholders
  • Enhance the university’s reputation through networking opportunities

Appointments/Group Presentations/Campus Events
  • Develop and deliver group presentations during Information Sessions, Open Houses, Mini-Open House programs, virtual events, and bus trips
  • Meet with prospective students and their families
  • Answer phone calls and respond to emails from prospective students or families inquiring about SUNY Cortland


Functional and Supervisory Relationships
  • Reports to the Sr. Associate Director of Admissions
  • Works closely with Admissions Office staff, Faculty, Advisement and Transition Office and other administrative offices


Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience in higher education or experience in sales, marketing, or communications
  • A willingness and ability to travel
  • A willingness and ability to perform occasional evening and weekend work
  • A valid driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree
  • Experience working in a higher education admissions office as a professional, tour guide or intern
  • Experience in admissions application review or other similar decision-making process
  • Experience with SLATE or another customer service management software
  • Experience with Banner or another Student database systems
  • Experience with OnBase or another document imaging software
